Guilford’s Golley, Mayton Win Weekly Awards

Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College’s Samantha Golley (Street, Md./North Harford) won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week Award and the Quakers’ Caitlyn Mayton (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) captured ODAC’s Women’s Tennis Player of the Week Award Monday, league officials announced. Golley also won the Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week Award, presented weekly by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The awards cover competition from March 31-April 6.

Golley, a 6-0 freshman pitcher, went 2-0 with a 0.70 earned run average (ERA) and 13 strikeouts in two appearances last week. The Quakers’ first winner of the league’s weekly softball honor since 2005, she also hit .583 in four games with a triple and four runs batted in (RBI). Golley tossed a five-inning, two-hitter in the Quakers’ 9-1 win over league-rival Randolph College April 2. She fanned a career-high nine batters in the win and helped herself at the plate with a single and two RBIs. Golley improved her record to a team-leading 7-3 April 6 with a five-inning, two-hit showing at ODAC-foe Sweet Briar College. The Quakers claimed a 14-1 win and Golley extended her hitting streak to a club-high 12 games with two singles. The victory marked Guilford’s 16th of the season, which ties the school record.

Samantha Golley

Through games of April 6, Golley owns a 7-3 record with one save and a 4.20 ERA in 14 appearances. She has two shutouts and 51 strikeouts in 66.2 innings with 30 walks allowed. At the plate, she hits .351 with seven doubles and 10 RBIs. Golley and coach Dennis Shores’ Quakers (16-15-1, 6-8 ODAC) visit Mary Baldwin College Tuesday (4/8) in a nonconference doubleheader.

Mayton, Guilford’s first ODAC Tennis Player of the Week in 2008, won two singles’ matches in Guilford’s 1-2 week. She was leading in a third-singles match versus Hollins’ Mary Sheridan April 2 before the match was called due to darkness. The senior defeated Greensboro College’s Susan Harris in straight sets April 4 in her 2008 second-singles debut. The win helped Guilford down its crosstown rivals, 6-3, and end a four-match losing skid. Mayton accounted for the Quakers’ lone point in an 8-1 ODAC loss to Roanoke College April 6 with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over the Maroons’ Kristin Nagy at third singles.

Catlin Mayton

Mayton leads Guilford with a 7-3 singles record, which includes a 5-2 dual-match mark at third singles. She has a 6-6 overall doubles record and tops coach Jennifer Anderson’s ’96 club with 13 overall victories. The Quakers (5-5, 1-5 ODAC) host Averett University Wednesday (4/9) in a 3:30 p.m. nonconference match.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a breast cancer awareness promotion, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
