High School baseball in the Spring Sports Report

Don’t forget today we have Grimsley(8-4) at Northwest Guilford(8-4) at 6pm and who will be going/throwing for the Vikings and the Whirlies? Logan Self went for NWG yesterday against East Forsyth so the Vikings may have to send out Omar De la Rosa, Robbie McIntosh, or Tommy Plante and the Whirlies might just counter with their freshman ace George Carter or the veteran Jon Wilkinson, a senior.

These same two teams are set to meet next Tuesday at Grimsley in the rematch and we hope to have radio coverage for that game on AM950.

Eastern Randolph travels to Southeast Guilford(11-2/7-0) today to face the Falcons in a makeup of last Friday’s rain out game. SEG was scheduled to take on WG today but they must take care of the Mid-Piedmont 3-A conference games first. Game time at SEG is set for 7pm and at that same time it will be East Davidson at Southwest Guilford and Chatham Central at Eastern Guilford. The SWG and EG games are originally scheduled games so with last week’s rain they may have to re-set conference priorities as well.

From Tuesday it was East Forssyth over NWG 2-1 in a tight one with Ryan Dull pitching a complete game for the EF Eagles. Dull is now (5-0) as a starter and EF stands at (11-2) and the Eagles are (4-0) in the Metro 4-A. Dull is a hard-working kid and he has earned the success he and his team are experiencing. Robbie Swab, Travis Starbuck, and Evan Orenstein also contributed for EF. Logan Self’s HR was the only run scored for NWG. Don’t forget the Big One today, Grimsley at Northwest…..

The Southeast Guilford Falcons had no problems with Trinity on Tuesday as SEG won big in the Varsity game 16-4 and SEG JV’s topped the Bulldogs 9-4. Freshman Josh Tobias got the win for the Falcon varsity striking out 7 and walking only one Bulldog batter. Tobias is now (3-0) for SEG and you would think the righthander only went five innings and that the mercy-rule came into play with the 16-4 score on the new Falcon scoreboard. Seniors Austin Moyer, Cam Cockman, and Jeff Medley all had home runs for SEG and fellow-senior Justin Venable had a triple. Cockman had 6RBIS’s, Venable 3RBI’s and Moyer had 2RBI’s for the Falcons.

The SEG JV’s(10-3) were led again by Tiger Miller, Jay “Big George” Steele, Colby King and by A. Kirkpatrick. It was a 9-4 Falcon win and Miller went 2-3 with a walk and he had 5RBI’s.

High Point Wesleyan defeated Greensboro Day School 10-1 to send the Trojans to (9-2) on the season. Michael Dimock led the Trojans going 2-5 with a home run and 2RBI’s and Dimock was the winning pitcher for HPW and his record improves to (5-0) with the win. Cameron Hendrix also had two key hits including a big double and 2RBI’s for HPW. We have not heard anything lately on Mr. Midkiff or Mr. Hickernell?????

Northern Guilford dropped two games to Western Alamance in the Triad 3-A conference, 9-3 in game one and 7-0 in game two. The WA Warriors hit at least three balls out of the park in a game played at WA. Speculation that Western may have treated NG disrepectfully, but from more recent first-hand accounts, Western did not casue any problems. We need a few problems and disturbances, but not this time and remember, NG beat the Smith Golden Eagles in the first game of the season and a make-up game is still due up between these two teams.

The Vandalia Vikings topped Grace Christian 9-5 as we get a plug in there for the VCS Vikings(6-4) down on Pleasant Garden Road.

That’s it for today, any comments or adjustments, just leave them in our box below…..

  1. I was at both Games yesterday between Western Alamance and Northern Guilford. I did not see what you are describing as happening. Western Alamance players were well behaved as well as the Northern players. I do not know where you got this information from but it is toally wrong. Both games went smooth and Western Alamance I think hit 3 homeruns in 2 games. Your informer must be making this up.

  2. Tommy Plante had a very good night on the mound relief pitching against East Forsyth for Northwest in the 6th and 7th innings in the 2-1 loss Tuesday night. He struck out the sides in the 6th inning on 10 pitches and struck out the number 3 and number 5 hitters in the 7th inning. Plante has only given up two earned runs this season in five outings on the mound.

  3. Ryan Dull became 8-0 with the win on Tuesday and East Forsyth became 12-3 with then win and is now 13-3 and will play Page tomorrow (4/15)
