Greensboro College Athletics Hall of Fame Induction on Saturday

Greensboro College will induct its 2008 Athletics Hall of Fame class on April 12, 2008. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at Finch Chapel as part of GC’s Alumni Weekend.

The new inductees are:

Damon Forney ‘81, men’s basketball – Forney, of Beaufort, N.C., remains on the all-time leader board after 30 years in 6 career categories, including scoring (5th, 1,437 points) rebounding (6th, 471), and is GC’s single season field goal percentage leader (68.9%) while converting nearly 88% of his free throws for his career. Named 1st Team All-DIAC in 1978, 1980 and 1981, while being selected Team MVP in 1978 and 1980 and named 1st Team All-South District. Received the Joseph Athletic Award (top student-athlete at GC) in both 1980 and 1981.

Stephanie Manus Carter ‘94, women’s soccer and lacrosse – A native of Contoocook, NH, Carter is on the all-time leader board in 15 career categories, including scoring (1st, 1,520 points) rebounding (2nd, 990), steals (2nd, 204), field goals (1st, 611) free throws made (1st, 101) and scoring average (5th, 15 ppg). Scored lacrosse program’s first goal in school history during the inaugural 1993 season and recorded 50 goals in just two seasons. Recipient of both the Joseph Athletic Award (top student-athlete at GC) and the Top Female Scholar-Athlete Award.

Brian Thierrin ‘96, men’s soccer – Thierrin, of Columbia, MD, led The Pride to a team record of 40-9-4 from 1993-95. Was named All-American in 1995, becoming only the second GC men’s soccer AA in school history. Named All-South Region and All-DIAC in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Also earned DIAC All-Academic and GC Athletic Director Honor Roll recognition in those years.

Nicole Durand ‘98, women’s soccer – A native of Clifton, Va, Durand was a prolific scorer in soccer. She leads The Pride in four career statistical categories, including most points (125) and goals (58). Named soccer All-American in 1997—becoming the first women’s soccer AA in school history. Named All-South Region in 1997 and All-DIAC 1st Team in 1995 and 1997 and 2nd Team in 1994 and 1996 and team Most Valuable Player in 1997.

Andy Jankowski ‘99, baseball – Jankowski, of Mingo Junction, OH, was a first-baseman and holder of 20 career records. Batted .362, had highest on-base percentage (.464), most hits (188), and most RBI’s (115). Named All-South Region in 1996 and 1997. Named All-DIAC 1st Team in 1996 and 1997 and 2nd Team in 1998. Led team to a dramatic conference title and NCAA Tournament, the lone playoff bid for GC baseball.

Herk DeGraw ‘75 – A native of West Morris, NJ, DeGraw played in the first 3 years of the men’s soccer program’s history. Earned All-DIAC honors as a senior. DeGrwaw is being specifically honored today for his long and impressive career as a youth soccer coach, having served 27 years as the boys head coach and 25 years as the girls head coach at Grimsley High School in Greensboro. His teams combined for 27 conference titles, 15 state championship appearances and 6 state titles.

Robert Linville, Head Golf Coach (1995-2007) – Linville, of Oak Ridge, NC attended Northwest Guilford High School and Guilford College. Led The Pride to its first ever NCAA Division III national title in 2000, In his 13 seasons as head coach, 10 teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament and all but one finished 7th or higher, including national runner-up finishes in 1997 and 2002. Named by the Golf Coaches Association of America as the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in both 1999 and 2000.

1995 GC Men’s Soccer Team – Led by coach Steve Allison, the 1996 GC men’s soccer team earned a #16 national ranking. Currently tied for 6th all-time for most wins in a season (14) finishing the year at 14-4-1 (.763), a remarkable feat given only 4 games were played at home. Recorded quality wins over the defending national champion Bethany College, nationally ranked Messiah (#4) and Centre (#19) colleges, and its only conference defeat was to eventual NCAA Tournament runner-Up Methodist College (#2).

1980 GC Golf Team – Under the direction of DIAC Coach of the Year Jim Locke, the team finished fifth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament–the highest GC finish to that. The 1980 Hornet squad led by DIAC Medalist Tim Searcy and All-American Andy McMurry captured the conference crown. The squad anchored a run in which the program finished the season ranked in the top ten nationally five consecutive years.
