NWG grabs game one from Grimsley in the Spring Sports Report

The Northwest Guilford Vikings stopped Grimsley 5-4 on Wednesday at NWG in a major Metro 4-A conference battle. Robbie McIntosh had another impressive game for NWG as he went 3-3 and he ended up being the winning pitcher for the Vikings. McIntosh is one of the young men we mentioned in yesterday’s pre-game cover story and he came through for his team. Another man we talked about Omar De la Rosa got the save, while Logan Self, Alex Swim, Eric Presnell, and Corey McKinney all contributed for the Vikings at the plate with doubles, RBI’s, and runs scored.

George Carter and Pat Oechsli led Grimsley in hitting as they combined to go 5-7 and both young men had RBI’s. Carter ended up being the losing pitcher but he and the Whirlies will get another crack at Northwest next Tuesday when NWG(9-4) travels to Grimsley(9-5) for a 6pm contest. Round two next Tuesday at Grimsley. We plan on being right there in the middle of that Big One.

The Southeast Guilford Falcons buried Eastern Randolph on Wednesday 10-0 and a lot of the fans are asking the question, what has happened to ER? SEG moves to (12-2/8-0) with the win and the Falcons are still holding on to first place in the Mid-Piedmont 3-A conference. Cameron Cockman was the winning pitcher for SEG and the hitters for the Falcons were Cockman, Austin Moyer, and Josh Tobias. The trio went 6-9 as group and they drove in 7 of the Falcons 10 runs…Moyer and Cockman are seniors and Tobias is a freshman. The SEG JV’s won out over Eastern Randolph 11-3 and no word this time on Tiger Miller, Jay Steele, Colby King , or Kirkpatrick.

No other results from Wednesday and we thought we might have a score from Ragsdale but we do have some additional scores from back on Tuesday:

  1. The defensive plays by NW in the 7th inning were a key to the win over Grimsley. Seth Hanner made a spectacular diving catch laying out for the ball in center field for the first out of the inning. Omar De La Rosa, pitching in strong relief, exhibited a classy pitching gesture to his centerfielder by stepping off the rubber, pointing to Hanner, and applauding the effort.

The second out of the inning was made on a slow bounding ball hit to Robbie McIntosh at third. Robbie charged the ball hard and in one continuous sweeping motion was able to throw out the runner at first. Speed, quickness, and strength of release were key.

The last play was made by the NW second baseman Tommy Houston. The ball was hit one to two feet on the first base side of the second base bag. Tommy was able to quickly get to the ball sliding down on one knee and spinning to throw from his knee to first, showing speed and very good upper body and arm strenght to record the third out and seal the exciting win.

All three plays could have resulted in hits by the threeGrimsley batters, but all three NW players had clear focus on defense. Go NW!!!!
