McGowan is Guilford’s fourth student honored with the league’s weekly golf prize. Teammate and countryman Peter Latimer (Markinch, Scotland/Madras) has won the honor three times this year.

McGowan led the Quakers to a seventh-place finish among 15 teams at the Emory University Spring Invitational April 7-8 in Stone Mountain, Ga. His 36-hole score of 152 placed 19th among 80 competitors, his best finish in seven Guilford appearances. McGowan’s four-over par 74 in the opening round matched the second-lowest round of his college career. His play last week lowered his season stroke average to 77.75 in 16 rounds.

Coach Jack Jensen’s Quakers are ranked seventh in the April 2 edition of the NCAA Division III Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Poll and 13th in the April 9 Golfstat.com ratings. Guilford bids for its unprecedented 11th Old Dominion Athletic Conference title April 19-21 at the Poplar Grove G.C. in Amherst, Va.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a breast cancer awareness promotion, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
