Triad Power wins ASA Spring Fling

from Coach Danny Shutt:

The Triad Power 12u wins its first tournament of the 2008 season. They took home top honors at the ASA sponsored Spring Fling Tournament in Wallburg, NC. The four game guarantee tournament hosted ten 12u teams from NC and VA.

The Power opened Saturday morning with the Carolina Attitude from Davidson County. Starting pitcher Ashton Dobbins hit the mound on fire. Her fast ball and off speed pitches kept the Attitude batters off balance the entire game. Timely hits by Hayley Rumely and Haleigh Epperson propelled the Power to a 5-0 win.

The Power’s next opponent was the Prowlers from Patrick County Virginia. Morgan Coleman pitched the complete game and only allowed two hits. Big hits by Molly Pustay, Bergan Goddard and Samantha Stilling sealed the 15-0 win.

The final game on Saturday we drew the Carolina Fusion from Southern Alamance County. Bergan Goodard started on the mound and pitched great game. Our defense was tough, Ashely Carter caught everything at third base. Good patience at the plate and some well hit balls earned the Power an 8-1 victory.

On Sunday the Power drew the DC Thunder also from Davidson County. The Power had faced the Thunder once before and won in extra innings. Both teams are undefeated and the winner goes to the championship. A must win game placed the pitching duties on Ashton Dobbins. Again the pitches from Dobbins had the Thunder batters guessing. Great defense and cover splitting hitting put the Power in the championship with a 13-0 win.

The Power now one win away from their first championship had to play the Carolina Fusion. The Fusion, playing in their first tournament in 2008 had championship in their eyes. The score was tied 1-1 after two innings, in the third the fusion tacked on three and made it 4-1. Bergan Goddard got the pitching start and Ashton Dobbins came in during the third. The Power came back and tacked on two and made it 4-3. The Power defense held and had last bat with the time limit closing fast. The Power managed to load the bases and a walk by Samantha Stilling tied the game. Kara Shutt, batting second hits a screamer that tips off the third baseman’s glove and scores two. Brianna Webb’s rocket single up the middle scores another run and seals the win 7-4 when time expires.

*****Congrats to the Triad Power and we hope to get more good reports like this one from Coach Shutt and his assistant Todd Webb.*****
