Army named National team-of-the-week

WEST POINT, N.Y. – On the strength of a historical four-game sweep of archrival Navy, Army was named Collegebaseballinsider.com national Team of the Week last Thursday.

The Black Knights, who registered a perfect 6-0 showing last week, defeated Iona and Manhattan in non-league action, then swept a four-game Patriot League series versus Navy in Annapolis, Md.

Army joins an esteemed grouping of teams to earn Collegebaseballinsider.com Team of the Week honor this season. The list includes Georgia, Southern Miss, Missouri, Kentucky and Rice.

Army is in first-place in the Patriot League with a (10-6) record and they have improved to (18-20) overall and the Army Black Knights are led by two local Guilford County kids, Clint Moore from Grimsley and JP Polchinski from Ragsdale High School. Moore is a freshman shortstop and Polchinski a junior third baseman. Here’s how the two locals stack up in the current stats column:

From Army’s games Saturday vs. Lehigh:Army turned three double-plays in each game … SS Clint Moore and 2B Tony Capozzi spun five grounders into twin-killings, including a spectacular turn in the second game … 3B J.P. Polchinski added several outstanding defensive plays in the second game.

Clint Moore stole home on the back end of a successful double-steal for Army’s run in the second inning.

On Sunday Army vs. Lehigh:Back-to-back solo home runs by Kevin McKague and JP Polchinski off Lehigh reliever Rob Russell in the eighth inning sealed the verdict for Army.
3B J.P. Polchinski made several eye-popping defensive plays for the second consecutive day …
