Guilford Takes Second at ODAC Golf Tournament

Amherst, Va. – Guilford College placed second at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men’s golf tournament Monday. The Quakers shot Monday’s low round (295), but were unable to overcome the 28-stroke lead with which champion Washington and Lee University opened the third and final round. The Generals shot 313 Monday and finished with a 54-hole 909, 10 strokes ahead of Guilford and 20 strokes in front of third-place Hampden-Sydney College.

Washington and Lee senior Nathaniel James captured medalist honors with a five-over-par 77 Monday to finish with a three-round 222, two strokes ahead of Randolph-Macon’s Ralston King and Generals’ teammate Brad Watts. James also captured the league’s Player of the Year Award.

Guilford’s Burton Wood (Siler City, N.C./Jordan-Matthews) shot the Quakers’ low round of the tournament with an even-par Monday. He placed fifth individually to earn all-tournament honors. He was joined on the six-man team by teammate Brian Creghan (Radnor, Pa./Conestoga), who moved into sixth place Monday with a one-over 73.

The Generals receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship next month in Georgia. The Quakers must hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA field.
