Guilford College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Randolph-Macon 15, Guilford 14

Greensboro, N.C. – Alex Wright’s (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) unassisted goal with 6:52 remaining broke a 12-12 tie and lifted visiting Randolph-Macon College to a 15-14 victory over Guilford College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal match Wednesday afternoon.

The fifth-seeded Yellow Jackets (6-9) advance to Saturday’s (4/26) ODAC Tournament semifinal match at top-seeded Washington and Lee University. The Quakers, seeded fourth for their first ODAC Tournament home game, end their season with a 9-7 mark, which ties the school record for wins in a season.

Wright’s tally, her second of the game, triggered a decisive 3-0 Yellow Jackets’ run that opened a 15-12 margin. Logan Pomeroy (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) scored off a Lacy Phelps (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) feed with 5:15 and Erin Clare Cassidy (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) netted her second score with 4:31 left for Randolph-Macon.

Guilford’s Carolyn Rodda (Bethesda, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) made it a 15-13 game 17 seconds later and Kelly Gonzalez (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) brought the Quakers to within 15-14 with 1:19 to play. Randolph-Macon won the ensuring draw, but turned it over. Guilford moved into the offensive zone. Lindsay Schabert (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) saved a Shelly Nogueira (East Calais, Vt./Union-32) free-position shot with just under 51 seconds remaining to preserve the Yellow Jackets’ lead.

Laura Fox (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) scored the game’s first three goals and Phelps scored 5:33 into the game, which have the Yellow Jackets a 4-0 lead. Guilford pulled to within 7-5 at haltime and tied it for the first time on a Mary Hutchins (West Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) scored with 20:31 left in the match. Guilford never led in the match, forced three ties in the final 20 minutes.

Phelps and Fox both finished with three goals for Randolph-Macon, which outshot Guilford, 36-28. Cassidy scored a game-high six points on two goals and four assists. Wright, Emily Kent (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle), and Marie Parry (Springfield, Va./Lee) all scored twice. Pomeroy won a game-high five draw controls, which helped the Yellow Jackets to a 17-13 edge in the category. Schabert finished with seven saves.

Nogueira led all scorers with four goals and picked up a game-high six ground balls. Carrie Ernst (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) finished with three goals and an assist. Hutchins, who graduates as Guilford’s career scoring leader with 226 points, scored two goals and two assists in her final Guilford College match. Sophomore goalie Alyzza-May Callahan (Fairhaven, Mass./New Bedford) made 10 saves.

Randolph-Macon, which avenged a 13-12 home loss to the Quakers in the regular season, improved to 16-3 in ODAC Tournament quarterfinals. Guilford dropped to 0-9 in ODAC Tournament quarterfinal matches.
