Spring Sports Report:Senior Night at SEG and Dudley brings home a close one

Southeast Guilford honored six seniors on Wednesday evening at SEG and the Falcons had a re-match with Southern Guilford and this one was much closer than last Thursday’s 27-0 ball game at SG. In Wednesday’s game the Falcons topped the Storm on the strength of two home runs by senior Austin Moyer and a home run by fellow-senior Justin Venable. Jake Ozment hit a homer for Southern and in this game the Storm jumped on top early going ahead 1-0 in the top of the first. The final became 8-4 and SEG has seen their record swell to (17-2/11-0) as they prepare for Ragsdale this afternoon.

The six Falcon seniors were announced before the game got under way and they took the field and stood with their parents and SEG teacher John Sweithart talked about the players’ achievements over the PA system. Austin Moyer, Cam Cockman, Jeff Medley, Justin Venable, Eric Seders, and Pat Nisbet were all out there representing the senior class and this group of seniors may well have more wins under their belts than any other four-year collective group in school history. It was a nice touch and all in attendance should be proud of the accomplishments these young men have put together.

As far as the game goes it was nothing like last week and the 27-0 affair at SG, in fact Southern played much better and SEG was still up 8-1 until SG closed the gap late in the contest. Eric Seders got the start on the mound and he did well and was later relieved by Brian Webb and Josh Tobias. The return of Brian Webb, that was a good sign for Southeast and Webb was a bit rusty but I’m sure he will help the team in their state championship run. Webb has been out of the lineup since the first week of the season.

More on the game with Austin Moyer hittig two balls out for home runs and he collected 5RBI’s and Justin Venable was 3-3 at the plate and he added a homer to the SEG run scoring total. One of the kids in the crowd was telling Trey Gilmore to do something with his at bats and for encouragement they were yelling internet at Gilmore as a way to get him inspired to get a hit and then he would get a few hits at GREENSBOROSports.com. The internet and GREENSBOROSports.com are having an impact on the local sports community. I spoke with several people who are checking out this site. The Bighams, the Medleys, the Millers, the Pannell, the Venables, the Smiths, the Webbs, the list goes on and on and so does this article.

I spoke to Ed Bigham for a few minutes, and he said that first ball that went flying into the crowd at the SEG-Randleman game, did hit Mr. Cockman and not Blair Moyer. Glad we got that cleared up…Ed and I were also talking with Dave Ferris who used to run the Sports and Hobbies Unlimited sporting goods store with Jeff Swaimey and Ken Gordon. It was one of the better stores in town and it was located in the Lawndale Shopping Center and I couldn’t tell you what’s in that old location now. Basketball referee and banker Scotty Davis later bought the store and moved it out to High Point Road near the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Shop at the corner of HP and Holden Road. SHU(Sports and Hobbies Unlimited) is now long gone.

Solid game for SEG on Wednesday and now the Falcons travel to face the Ragsdale Tigers this afternoon in Jamestown in a Mid-Piedmont 3-A conference game.

The Dudley Panthers won a close one at home on Wednesday night and I was able to catch this game too since SEG-SG got going at 6pm the Dudley-Western Alamance game sent the first pitch across the plate at about 7:30. This gave me three games on the day with Hoppers at 10:45am, SEG-SG at 6pm and Dudley-WA at 7:30…

Dudley topped a strong Western Alamance team 5-3 with freshman AJ Williams on the mound for the Panthers and Tevin Neal coming on in relief. Senior Rebuen Torellas was at the game but he had to leave out early with an upset stomach. Dudley is loaded with sophomore talent and one of those sophs., Ray Crawford had 2 doubles and he drove in 3 runs. Crawford is one of the top up-and-coming talents around here and he’s the young man that hit the three-run homer to win it for Dudley over Smith at NewBridge Bank Park last Saturday afternoon. College and pro scouts are already at Panther games watching Crawford play.

With Southeast Guilford’s Jeff Medley, Grimsley’s Gabe Dimock, and Dudley’s Ronnie Burkes you have three of the best high school catching talents anywhere and Burkes did another fine defensive job behind the plate last night for the Panthers. You take Burkes defense, Medley’s hitting, and Dimock’s all-around game calling ability and put it all together and you have one heck of a baseball player and the above mentioned skills are inter-changeable among the three kids.

Dudley is having a great year and last night’s win takes them to (13-4) if our numbers are correct and then it stays busy for Dudley over the next few days. You take last night’s win over Western Alamance and then today Dudley is at Northern Guilford, Friday the Panthers are at Northeast, Saturday they host Grimsley, and then Monday they travel to face Western Alamance again. Dudley is really playing steady and progressive baseball and they looked sharp in last night’s 5-3 win over WA.

Northwest Guilford grabbed an 8-2 victory over Ledford and the Vikings should go to (14-6) with that win. Robbie McIntosh hit a two-run homer for NWG and he was the winning pitcher for the Vikings on Wednesday. Alex Swim went 3-4 and scored a couple of runs and Logan Self delivered some big blows with a HR and 4RBI’s. Self also went 3-4 at the plate. NWG still has East Forsyth coming up and the Grimsley Whirlies are at High Point Central on Friday, at Dudley on Saturday, and they have Smith at home next Tuesday.

Remember SEG at Ragsdale and Dudley at Northern today and if you know of other games please drop them in our comment box.
