Guilford College Athletics Update – 04/29/08

Guilford’s women’s tennis team placed seventh at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament last weekend. The Quakers defeated Sweet Briar in the opening round before falling to nationally ranked Washington and Lee, 7-0, in the quarterfinals. Guilford went 1-1 in the consolation round, losing to Roanoke, 5-1, and defeating Lynchburg College for seventh place, 5-3. The Quakers finished the year with an 11-9 overall record, the program’s third straight winning season. The Quakers’ softball team concluded its finest season in school history with a 6-5 loss to Bridgewater College Saturday in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. The Eagles scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to pull out the win. Kelly Guarnieri went four-for-four with her fourth homer and two RBIs in the loss. Guilford lost to Eastern Mennonite, 3-2, in Friday’s opening round of the ODAC Tournament. The Quakers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Royals rallied with two unearned runs in the fifth to pull out the win. Amber Stapler, who represented Guilford on the all-tournament team, had two hits in the loss. The Quakers’ men’s lacrosse team ended the season with a 19-2 loss to 16th-ranked Washington and Lee Saturday. Matt Halip and Colin Davis tallied for Guilford and senior Andrew Vigne made 13 saves in his final college game. Vigne concludes his career with 674 saves, which ranks third in school history. Classmate Todd Bochenek had an assist in his final game, which gives him 66 for his career, Guilford’s sixth-highest total. Ben Strong of the men’s basketball team competed in the Collegiate Basketball Invitational last weekend in Wadsworth, Ohio. He was one of 64 senior selected from the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA ranks to compete in the eight-team, three-game tournament.
