  1. In a recent game at East Forsyth, there was a play that could have brought serious injury to a runner going into home. The batsman hit the ball to the outfield and the runner on second rounded third and headed for home. When the runner reached the batter’s box, a bat was in his path left perpendicular to the third base line blocking the plate. The runner could not slide on the close play and had to leap over the bat touching the back side of the plate. A serious injury could have resulted if not for the athleticism of the runner. The seasoned home plate umpire, who calls many college games, was traditionalist and did not remove the bat, nor should he have been expected to do so. The job of bat removal is up to the on-deck batter.

Players should always be alert to this situation while in the on-deck circle. They have a major role to play to help their fellow teammates avert injury. You never know if an umpire is going to touch the bat or not. Hope everyone who reads this reminds others of the importance of the on-deck batter staying focused on their tasks. All the best in the States.
