Kelly Smith from West Virginia to East Carolina…..

GREENVILLE, N.C.– East Carolina University head women’s basketball coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener announced last Tuesday that Kelly Smith, a former top 160 recruit, has signed a scholarship to attend ECU and play basketball beginning in the fall.

The 5’11” guard spent the past two seasons at West Virginia University and was a redshirt freshman for the 2006-2007 season.

“We are excited to have Kelly join our program,” Baldwin-Tener said. “We recruited her very heavily out of high school when she was one of the top players in the state of North Carolina. She has the ability to play either the 3 or 4 positions for us and she is a great shooter. We are looking forward to her joining our Pirate Family.”

Smith finished her freshman campaign playing in 25 of the Mountaineer’s 33 games, including both of WVU’s NCAA Tournament games.

A native of Staley, North Carolina, Smith had a stellar high school career while playing for Eastern Randolph High School. She averaged 18.3 ppg., 11.0 rpg., and 6.0 apg. as a senior. She scored 1,647 career points finishing her career as Eastern Randolph’s all-time leading scorer. Smith was a four-time all Randolph County selection, a three-time Randolph County Player-of-the-Year, as well as an All-State Selection and Mid-Piedmont Conference Player-of-the-Year her senior year. She was also an Honorable Mention McDonald’s All-American and a participant in both the North Carolina/South Carolina All-Star Game and the East/West All-Star Game.(from ecupirates.cstv.com)

  1. We have been wondering where Kelly was attending school. She is a great Basketball player and seems to have a Great Personality. Good Luck Kelly. We are the grandparents of Brad Monroe. Brad is doing well and he attends Guilford College in Greensboro. We are checking out your schedule, would love to see Kelly playing again. She has such a sweet shot.
