We have a State Champion:High Point Wesleyan claims Independent schools baseball title…

High Point Wesleyan defeated Charlotte Christian 6-5 on Saturday and then followed that up with a 14-4 win on Sunday afternoon to claim the State Independent Schools 3-A title down in Cary. The High Point Wesleyan Trojans are your State Baseball Champions.

HPW took the title from Charlotte Christian School, a team that had won the championship six straight years. Six years in a row and HPW goes out and breaks up that title reign. High Point Wesleyan grabbed the first win in the best-of-three series 6-5 on Saturday and Will Meyers(9-1) was the winning pitcher. David Anderson hit two home runs in Saturday’s victory and David went on to hit three home runs in two days(games) as he clubbed another one in Sunday’s finale.

On Sunday Wesleyan got behind 4-1 early and then came back in the third and fourth innings to run away with the game, winning 14-4 and the game was called in the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. Clinton Ingram hit a homer on Sunday and David Anderson added his third round-tripper in two days for the HPW Trojan offense. Tyler Hickernell was the winning pitcher in Sunday’s game and Michael Dimock added two hits for the State Champion Trojans.

The biggest part of this feat is again, the fact that Charlotte Christian School had won six straight State Championships before this weekend’s title series. The State Title now belongs to High Point Wesleyan and Coach Scott Davis and his High Point Wesleyan Trojans can celebrate now that their quest for the Title is complete.

The only remaining question to come out of all of this is this point, “isn’t it odd that you had two Christian Schools playing for the State Title on Sunday?” Sunday is considered a day of rest and is known to many historical theologians as the Sabbath. From the word, we have read and heard for many years, “Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy”. Many Christian schools refrain from playing on Sundays. The High Point Enterprise newspaper had touched on this earlier and I thought it might be something we should include in our discussions here.

No matter how you slice it the High Point Wesleyan Trojans are your “State Champions” and Coach Scott Davis and his players are to be congratulated on this outstanding accomplishment. “Seek and ye shall find, knock and the door shall be open”. That is what this High Point Christian school has done, they sought the title, they knocked down the door, and they found the title waiting for them on the inside.

Wesleyan beat a very good team in Charlotte Christian. Charlotte Christian had won that Championship six years in a row and Charlotte Christian also beat Northwest Guilford, the Metro 4-A conference tournament champions, earlier this season and Charlotte Christian plays a very tough all-arond schedule.
