Western Guilford girls win sectional finals

The Western Guilford girls beat the team that had been taking them to the cleaners for the past several seasons as they got by Burlington Williams 2-1 on Saturday evening at WG.

The Hornets will travel to face Jacksonville in the state 3-A semifinals this week. The Hornets play their home games in an old swamp out near the school and just below the old Friendly Road Inn(an All-You-Can-Eat Family FishHouse) that was owned by the Shaw family for many years.

Western was led by Claire O’Keffee with one key goal and Caitlin Gillis had 27 saves in goal for Western Guilford. If you have any other Hornet leaders for us please leave them in the comment box.

Good luck to the Hornets as they head to Jacksonville, N.C. this week.

*****Other players we are hearing about include Natilie Stutts another goalie for the Hornets and Carly O’Keffee, Claire’s sister is on the team. Western is now (21-1-1) and they will travel to Jacksonville White Oak this week.*****

+++++Conner Sherwood and Jon Roy of Grimsley won the men’s State 4-A Doubles title in tennis this past weekend. Danny Harnden of FOX8 Sports had the story but he said not one, but two times, that they had just won the State 3-A title. Craig Thomas of WXII TV12 Sports had the story but Ms. Jamie Baldwin, the intern over at Channel 2, did not mention this story unless I just flat out missed it. I was watching all of the above stations to see how they covered the weekend high school activities.+++++
