Guilford College Ranked 14th in Final Golf World/Nike Golf Poll

Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College’s men’s golf team was ranked 14th in the fifth and final Division III Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Poll of the spring season. The Quakers dropped two places from their position in the April 23 rankings. Voting for the final poll took place prior to the NCAA Division III Championships, which St. John’s (Minn) University won for the second straight season May 16.

Methodist University retained sole possession of first place in the final poll after receiving 10-of-12 first-place votes. The Monarchs placed fourth at the NCAA Championships. Oglethorpe College maintained second place in the poll and was followed by Huntingdon College, which traded places with St. John’s. The Johnnies earned the poll’s remaining two first-place votes. Redlands College, which finished three strokes behind St. John’s at the NCAA tournament, rounded out the top five.

The Quakers completed the season April 21 with a second-place finish at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships. In addition to the ODAC tourney, Guilford placed second at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate and the Greensboro College Invitational. The Quakers defeated 11 schools to win the Oglethorpe Invitational Oct. 23.

Sophomore Peter Latimer (Markinch Fife, Scotland/Madras), at First Team All-ODAC honoree, posted the Quakers’ lowest stroke average (75.22) by a slim margin over junior teammate Burton Wood (Siler City, N.C./Jordan-Matthews (UNC Greensboro)) (75.39), also a First Team all-league pick.

Jack Jensen expects four letter winners back for his 32nd season as the Quakers’ head coach in 2008-09.
