East-West All-Stars update

The state’s top high school senior athletes have accepted invitations to participate in the NCCA East-West All-Star Games in July.

Women’s Basketball
Several AP All-State selections are expected to play in the 34th women’s all-star basketball game in the Greensboro Coliseum on July 21 (6:30 p.m. tip off).

Kurie Washington, a 5-8 guard of McDowell High School and a two-time All-State selection expected to play for the West team. Also expected to play are fellow All-State selections Jessica Capers, a 6-1 forward of Forestview High School and a West Virginia University signee, and Morgan McMinn, a 5-11 forward of North Henderson High School. Fellow Grimsley High School teammates Trumaé Lucas, a 5-9 guard and a University of Florida signee, and Krystin Fields, a 5-11 forward and Towson University signee, are also expected to play.

The East team will be led by East Carolina signee Jean Best, a 6-4 center of Beddingfield High School, and Western Carolina signee Kaila’shea Menendez, a 5-8 guard-forward of Wakefield High School. Shatara Jackson, a 5-8 guard-forward of Laney High School and a Winston-Salem State University signee, and Brittanni Billups, a 6-1 forward-center of Eastern Wayne High School and a Longwood University signee, are expected to join them.

The East won last year’s game 75-67 and leads the all-time series 19-14.

Women’s Soccer
Twenty-three All-State selections are expected to play in the 17th women’s all-star soccer game at UNCG Soccer Stadium on July 22 (7 p.m. kickoff).

The East team is expected to field eleven All-State selections in this game featuring the state’s top senior soccer players. Among those expected to play are a trio of N.C. State University signees from the Raleigh area: Paige Dugal of Garner Magnet High School, Kimberly Kern of Leesville Road High School, and Stephanie Partenheimer of Apex High School. UNC signee Kim Currie of Lumbrton High School and UNC Greenboro Signee Nicole Danford of Green Hope High School are also expected to play.

The West is expected to counter with a team consisting of twelve All-State selections. Leading these All-State selections will be Meghan Gilmore of T.C. Roberson High School. Joining her are Furman signee Sarah Caldwell of Watauga High School , Wake Forest signee Taylor Norman of Ronald Reagan High School, Wingate signee Kelly Adams of Porter Ridge High School, and Limestone College signee Kristin Alderin-Fleagle of East Forsyth High School.

The West won last summer’s contest 3-1 and now owns a 7-5-4 lead in the series.
