IT’S JR. GOLF TIME AT SEDGEFIELD…..

I went by Sedgefield Country Club yesterday for the practice round of the 2008 AJGA Footjoy Invitational. This tournament attracts the top 99 junior players from around the world.

A couple of names to watch are Houston’s Cory Whitsett, who finished 3rd. in last years event at Forest Oaks, University of Florida commitment from China, Mu Hu and Jordan Spieth of Dallas.

I checked out the Sedgefield track as much as the players. The bermuda grass is coming in just fine as the weather has heated up. One thing that stood out was the large cooling fans around about half of the greens. The fans are to keep the bent grass greens from burning up during these hot days leading up to the return of the PGA in August. These fans are huge- on poles about 6 feet tall-the width of the fans are about 45-50 inches-some air moving machines!

Round 1 of the tournament starts today with the first tee time at 7:00 a.m. This is a 4 round event, with Round 4 concluding on Friday, where the 2008 winner will be crowned.

If you like golf and want to see some of the best young talent in the world play on one of the finest courses in the world, Sedgefield is open and ready for big time tournament golf this week; all of this a mini-trial run for the return of The PGA Tour August 11-17.
