The 10U N.C. Gaters won their first game in pool play Wednesday at the AAU national championship in New Orleans, defeating the Arkansas Hawks 42-39.
Michael Buckland and Michael Featherston led the Gaters with 11 points each, Brendan Austin scored 7, and John Lamot and Jamie Newman combined for 25 rebounds. The Gaters play their second game of pool play at 12:45 p.m. today against DC Assault.

The North Carolina Gaters 16U Select team captured the USSSA D3 State Tournament on June 1st. The Gaters claimed the title by defeating the NC Stars by the score of 74-49 in the quarterfinals followed by a 77-51 semi-final victory over the Hillsborough Wolves. In the championship the Gaters defeated the Kinston Flight 43-40 to capture their second consecutive state title. The team was coached by Freddy Johnson and Mike Crabtree.
