There were several hundred high school football players on hand at Wake Forest on Sunday for the high school football combine. The kids had to pay in the neighborhood of $50.00 to $100.00 to participate and they came to WFU from all over the state and some kids came in from South Carolina and Virginia.
Wake coach Jim Grobe was there to look over the talent and he gave a talk to the young men on character and the importance of hard work on and off of the field. The players were at Wake to run the 40, do the weight reps, do the vertical jumping, complete the shuttle run, and to to work out in front of the Wake coaches in hopes of grabbing a scholarship and becoming a Demon Deacon one day.
High School football players from Page, Grimsley, Dudley, Charlotte Independence, Durham Hillside, and many other Guilford County schools, plus other kids from high schools from all over the state of NC, SC, and VA were on hand.
The combine ran pretty much from 9-5 and Steven Davis, the coach of the defending state 3-AA Dudley Panthers, was there to check on the progress of former Panthers Kenny Okoro and Dominique Midgett and to try and steer some of his current Panthers toward Jim Grobe and Wake Forest.
There were 315 kids there at a cost of 50.00. Only 150 were pre-registered so the camp was delayed some due to all the walk ups. Of the 150, many were invited. Hard to get a look at kids when so many show up. Comments I got back from staff were that there were lots of prospects but no out of this world guys that they did not already know. Only 1 kid broke 4.5 in the 40. Turf, cleats and wind make a difference. Wake also had a 4 day camp earlier in the week where they were able to do more serious evaluations.
