Will the REAL Sidney Lowe II please stand up?

Sidney Lowe II could face up to about 23 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to his role last year in a home invasion and a separate shooting at UNCG.

Defense attorneys began their pitch for a lower sentence late Monday. A forensic psychiatrist testified that Lowe’s dependency on marijuana and Ecstasy led him to take part in the robberies and that his sheltered upbringing left him unprepared for college life.

Lowe, son of N.C. State Wolfpack men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe, was a student at N.C. A&T at the time.

Lowe’s sentencing was expected to continue at 9:45 a.m. today in Guilford County Superior Court.

Defense attorney Locke Clifford plans to call a family friend and family members to the stand. He would not say if Coach Lowe would be among those asked to testify.

Clifford described the younger Lowe as a “gentle soul who knows nothing of guns and never robbed anyone before.” And after attending rehab, Lowe has “returned to his normal self, a humble, shy, God-fearing man,” Clifford said.

Lowe, 23, pleaded guilty Monday afternoon to possession of marijuana, possession of Ecstasy, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and six counts each of robbery with a dangerous weapon and second-degree kidnapping. Most of those charges stem from a March 16, 2007, home invasion.

*****After reading about everything that Lowe II did, I am having trouble buying Locke Clifford’s defense. Can the drugs change a person as much as the forensic psychiatrist is leading us to believe? How sheltered a life can a young person live when their parents aren’t around while they are growing up?

With the work schedule and life on the road in the NBA, you have to think that Sidney Lowe Sr. wasn’t there often while II was growing up. Sidney Lowe II sounds like a young man who was trying to escape and at the same time he was reaching out seeking attention and he was calling out for help.

Another option might be that Lowe II also suffers from Manic Depression. If he is manic depressive then he is experiencing mood swings and that might account for the mood and mind altering drugs that he was using. Lowe II was seeking answers when he went on these rampages and the best answer for him right now would be extended Jail Time and more Rehab.*****

  1. “II was unprepared for college life” therefore “he robbed people for drugs.”

Most people just don’t show up for some classes and miss some papers and flunk out, maybe find a job and move off-campus. But robbing people? Come on.

  2. See where dad speaks bad about A&T and it not being the first choice for his son. Guess A&T will not be using the Lowe family to help sell the school to potential students. Kid’s uncle talked about him dumbing down and becoming a thug. More good press for A&T.
