Play halted at Colt baseball tournament, action resumes today at 1pm

Lightning followed by heavy rain caused play to be stopped at the Colt East Zone baseball tournament last night at Stoner-White Stadium in Jaycee Park.

Action will resume today at 1pm with game one involving Greatneck, Virginia and Chesterfield County Virginia.

Game two this afternoon will feature the Greensboro White team, coached by Larry Farrer, meeting Lynnhaven, Virginia. The Greensboro White team was scheduled to play last night at 8pm but the rains of Wednesday evening washed everything away.

In last night’s game one Greatneck, Virginia was leading 3-1 when the game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning. CBC, the Chesterfield Baseball Club out of Chesterfield County VA was at the plate. The umpires for last night’s game were Cecil Mock and Doug Green. Both Cecil and Doug were on time for the game, in fact they arrived early, with time to spare.

The winner of today’s game number one between Chesterfield and Greatneck will play the winner of Greensboro/Lynnhaven VA at 4pm. The losers of the todays 1pm and 2pm games will then play at 6pm with the loser of that game being eliminated from the tournament.

In this, a double elimination tournament, the action will continue on Friday at Stoner-White Stadium. Next week the Greensboro Green Colt All-Star team will be in the next round of Colt baseball tournament play that will send the winner to Lafayette, Indiana for the Colt World Series. Hopefully the Greensboro White team will join GB Green in next week’s qualifier.

Last night they handed out those Bill White Scholarships with plaque and check included and one of the recipients, Austin Moyer, was almost a can’t miss pick. One of my fellow Pleasant Garden Methodist Church members, Don Venable, told me last Sunday that Moyer had something in the neighborhood of an 4.5 Grade Point Average when he graduated from Southeast Guilford High School this past June. Moyer is headed to the University of South Carolina-Upstate.

There was a good turn out of Colt committee members at last night’s game including Tommy Myers, Donine Stowe, Dave Thomas, Ray Hodgin, Ned McMillian, Larry Farrer, and many others who are working hard to make this tournament a success.

  1. The green team scrimmaged a mostly college legion team Tueday night and was only beat by 3 runs..I think 12 to 9. Our hats go off to the green team. Good luck guys!

  2. The entire list from last night is on this same page just a story or two down with all of the players names and bios….

Titled 2008 Bill White Scholarship winners.

Let me know if you don’t find it of if have left something out…

    Thanks,

  3. The green team scrimmaged the 17 year old Prep stars not a college legion team

  4. I beg your pardon..there were 19 year olds playing on that team…B. McKinney was one of them and a few other GTCC players…along with the Kernersville Legion team players..and a few old prep stars.
