Greensboro Green to go for the Gold after round one win over Hamilton, New Jersey…..

The Greensboro Green Colt baseball team will be going for the Gold in the 2008 East Zone tournament at War Memorial Stadium after last night’s 11-6 victory over the Lou Gehrig team from Hamilton, New Jersey.

The Greensboro team ended up with 11 runs on 12 hits, with one error and six men left on base; while the crew from Hamilton, New Jersey came up with 6 runs on three hits, with 5 errors and five men left on base.

The game went no score after one inning, 2-0 GBG after two innings, 4-0 GBG over HNJ after three innings, Hamilton, NJ picked up their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth and scored two runs but GBG was still on top 8-2 after four complete innings. GBG scored three more runs in the top of the fifth and led HNJ 11-2 at the end of five. HNJ added two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make the final stand at 11-6 Greensboro Green over the Lou Gehrig team from Hamilton, New Jersey.

Great starting pitching from the Greensboro Green’s Steven Mekita(Northwest Guilford HS) and the play of the day, the play of the week, the play of the month and who knows maybe the play of the year(but we’ll probably have to wait and see on that claim) belonged to Greensboro Green’s Brock Hudgens.

Hudgens made a catch in right field that has to be one the best web gems you’ll ever see. The catch came in the bottom of the second inning and it robbed Hamilton, NJ of their first hit of the night. Hudgens came up with the ball cleanly and to make it even better it was the third out of the inning. Huge catch by Brock Hudgens out of Southwest Guilford High School.

The Greensboro Green team got key hits all night long, especially early in the game with Tivon Clark(SEG) connecting on a big two-run, two-out hit(single, second on the throw) and drove in George Carter(Grimsley) and Bradley Burchette(NG). Later in the game Cal Sutphin(Grimsley) came up with a big run-scoring triple into the gap in left centerfield that rolled to the wall and pitcher Steven Mekita slapped a double after he left the mound in the fourth.

Mekita would be your winning Greensboro Green pitcher and it was mentioned earlier that Tivon Clark has excellent speed and he can hold down that centerfield position that probably would have gone to Lay Lay Brown, if Brown would have chose to stay in town. The Green team substituted freely as the game moved to the fourth inning and this one may have ended in five if Green would have stayed with the starters. Just an observation, but it’s good to see all of the kids get a chance to see game action and have a the opportunity to play in such a prestigious tournament.

Today Greensboro Green will face the Chesterfield Ball Club out of Chesterfield County Virginia, winners over Greensboro White in last week’s Colt regional at Stoner-White Stadium. The GBG/CBC game gets under way at 6pm and also on today’s slate we’ll see Hamilton, NJ versus Rockingham County. We’ll get back with you on the time for the HNJ/RC contest. All games to be played at Greensboro’s War Memorial Stadium on Yanceyville and Lindsey Streets.

We might see George Carter get the call today to start on the mound for Greensboro Green. He came in late last night for some relief work but didn’t stay out there long.

  1. Ask the Dudley’s coach about the centerfielder with blazing speed for NWG that caught 7 hard hit balls against them and was everywhere on the field in a NWG 3 to 1 win over Dudley during the colt season. He would like to forget about that night I’m sure.
