ECU Men’s Golf

GREENSBORO, N.C. — East Carolina assistant men’s golf coach and former letterman Robin Smith shot a six-under-par 66 to qualify for his first Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event, the Wyndham Championship, at an open qualifying tournament held at the Greensboro Country Club on Monday.

Smith earned one of four open spots this week’s PGA Tour event that begins Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Sedgefield Country Club.

As a member of the Pirate golf team, Smith recorded 18 top 20 finishes and six top 10 finishes during his four-year career. During the summer of 2007, Smith qualified and competed in the U.S. Amateur Championships.

Among those scheduled to compete are Zach Johnson and Angel Cabrera, last year’s Masters and U.S. Open winners. Paul Casey, Vijay Singh, Rocco Mediate and Davis Love III will also join Johnson and Cabrera in Wyndham’s field.

Brandt Snedeker, who played for current ECU head men’s golf coach Press McPhaul at Vanderbilt, is the defending tournament champion.

Sports icons Arnold Palmer and Richard Petty will join Snedeker at the opening ceremony Wednesday at 5 p.m. on the first tee at the Sedgefield Country Club.
