Hi-Toms are the CHAMPS AGAIN

THIRD CONSECUTIVE COASTAL PLAIN LEAGUE BASEBALL TITLE

The HiToms(High Point/Thomasville based team) won their third consecutive Petitt Cup Championship on Sunday afternoon in Columbia, South Carolina. J.B. MacDonald started for the HiToms and pitched four innings, giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Blake Ketner allowed an inherited runner of MacDonald’s to score, plus one additional run in the fifth inning to tie the game at four and erase the four-run lead the HiToms had after scoring four runs in the second inning. Three of the runs were unearned, as Richard Jones reached on an error with a ground ball to first with one out in the inning after only one run had come across at that point.

With the game tied at four in the bottom of the fifth, Richard Jones delivered the go-ahead run with a single to right field to score Chris McGuiness and give the HiToms the lead for good. Sonny Meade gave the ‘Toms the cushion they needed in the sixth when he blasted an offering from Florence reliever Ken Altman over the left field fence with a runner on to make it 7-4 HiToms.

The HiToms, who had a very good showing from their fan base, began to go into celebration mode, as Chase Stewart followed up two and two thirds innings of scoreless relief from Pat Dean with a five out save from Chase Stewart to close the game out. Dean was the pitcher of record when Jones drove in the go-ahead run, so he was credited with the win to finish the season at 5-2. Chase Stewart’s save was his sixth, while Altman took the loss to fall to 5-1. The HiToms became the first ever CPL team to win three consecutive CPL Petitt Cup Championships.
