And The Wyndham Winner is……………..‏

Unless you’ve been living under a golf cart for the last few weeks, you know the Wyndham Championship starts tomorrow, bright and early, with the first tee times at 7 a.m. With that in mind, as Senior Golf Writer-that means I’m the only golf writer and the oldest-I will give you three picks going into the start of the tournament.

Our first pick will be called “our flyer”-that’s a long shot for you folks in Mayodan-Our long shot is South Carolina’s Lucas Glover. Lucas hasn’t been playing well, but he has played the Sedgefield track several times in the last few weeks. I’m hoping the familiararity with the course could keep Lucas close.

Our second pick will be “our contender”-near the top but not quite enough to raise The Sam Snead trophy-I’m picking my sentimental favorite-Billy Mayfair-I usually don’t let sentiment come in, but Mayfair has had some medical issues and I hear is a good guy, as well as a terrific ball striker.

Speaking of ball striking, that leads us to my pick as the WINNER. This tournament should favor a good ball striker-not very long like so many courses the boys play, taking away the bombers advantage. It will also require a deft putting touch on the undulating, slick greens at Sedgefield, although today’s rain will soften the course somewhat, the mowers and the rollers will get it slick in a hurry. I’m going out on a one iron-I hear a few of the pros still have them-my pick to win is David Toms. He played well last week at the PGA-another Donald Ross course and is a major winner and qualifies as A+ ball striker and A- putter. You put the two together and get an A for our winner-David Toms.

Let’s meet at the first tee and I’ll see you at number eighteen green Sunday afternoon late! Welcome back, PGA to Sedgefield and Greensboro!
