Our look at the Piedmont Triad 3-A Conference

I will be the first to admit that we don’t know as much about these teams as we do the previous ones that we have talked about but that won’t stop us from lining them up for the 2008 season.

We have two teams in the Piedmont Triad conference with High Point Andrews and Southwest Guilford. HP Andrews has been tabbed to finish third in the conference and the Red Raiders have one of the area’s top talents in Tony Washington. Washington has already made the NC Preps News Pre-Season 3-A All-State team as a defensive back and when it comes to numbers offensively, Washington had over 2.100 yards in total offense in 2007 for HPA.

WS Carver’s Dominique Tate also made the NC Preps All-State team as a defensive back and Grimsley saw him last week and Dudley will face off with Tate and the Carver Yellowjackets this Friday night at Dudley.

HP Andrews finished at 5-6/3-2 one year ago and now second-year coach Rodney McCoy hopes to make a run at the conference title. Washington is the athlete and he will line up at WR/DB and you can expect him to be in on all the return plays. The Red Raiders QB will be Jordan Reid and he now has experience under his belt, throwing for over 2,000 yards and 16 TD’s last season. Reid and Washington will be ready and they will get help up front from big Charles Goodwin an OL who checks in at 6’6 245 with 4.8 40 speed. Other college prospects on the Red Raides roster include Cameron Neal and Kaciem Lynch.

Southwest Guilford went 3-8/1-4 back in 2007 and coach Scott Schwarzer has added Rick Larrick and Jon Oakley to his coaching staff in an attempt to shore up the Cowboys’ efforts. The hopes are there but do the Cowboys have the horses?(Early candidate for line-of-the-year) Do the Cowboys have the Horses?

SWG does have Northwest Guilford coming up this Friday night at NWG and it will take a major effort to stop the Vikings’ Chris Kennedy and Sean Pless. Donte Dawkins 6’2/190 with a 4.6 40 was All-Conference in 2007 at strong safety and he along with Chris Brown, LB 6’0/195 4.65, will be called upon to be the ones to slow down the oncoming Vikings. Brown joined Dawkins on the All-Conference team last season. Davis Inman is listed as the Cowboys’ quarterback and his favorite receiver should be Devin Bennett. Bracy Bonham is the big fullback at 6’2/225 4.75 and he will also spend some time on defense. Christian McClean will anchor the offensive line and sophomore Airyn Williams could be a star in the makings for SWG. Jordan Hunter and Sidney Hayes will add needed strength to the Cowboy defense.
