Our look at the North State 2-A Conference

In the North State 2-A, what else can you say, Ray Ray Butchee is listed as Pre-Season All-State by the NC Preps News, but they have the Reidsville quarterback listed as an Athlete not as the QB, that 2-A honor went to Tyler Janynes of Pisgah. I thought Ray Ray had already gone bye bye but he is still on the top of the hill up at Reidsville. Catch a glimpse of the numbers he put up last season:
98-163 on his passes for 2,075 yards and 23 TD’s plus 133 carries for 809 yards and 17 TD’s. Butchee led his team to the 2-AA State Championship with a 28-20 win over Shelby.

There are two other Guilford County boys from the North State 2-A Conference on that Pre-Season All-State list with Darren Garcia from Southern Guilford and Josh Morehead of Eastern Guilford holding down spots as defensive backs. The North State Conference is going to be very tough with Eastern and Southern trying to catch and upset Reidsville. Reidsville lost runningback Tayshun Graves, who scored 45 TD’s last season, but with Butchee they(The Rams) still have the firepower to repeat as 2-AA Champs but Shelby is still picked as #1 in the Pre-Season poll.

Southern returns Garcia and RB Scotty Wayne and both will have to help pull the SG Storm together after losing players like William Graves, Kencie Brewer, and Antonio Martin from the 2007 squad. Graves the RB and Brewer the LB have gone on to the college ranks, but Martin, who would have been the starting Storm QB, lost out on academics and will not be able to play in his senior year at Southern.

Garcia, 4.6 in the 40, will be the Storm quarterback and key defensive back, while Wayne at 5’11/205 with blazing 4.5 40 speed is the team’s top runningback and Wayne has already committed to East Carolina. We wish Coach Darryl Brown much success as he continues to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather C.K. Siler, long-time coach at SG.

Eastern coach Scott Loosemore has the game-plan. Coach Loosemore combines old-school work ethics with new-age footall philosophies to make a modern-day program win games at a school that many people couldn’t find if they had to. Eastern is tucked away out off of Highway 70/Burlington Road and they are almost right in Gibsonville. Southern is also hard to find unless you know where you are going but it is much easier to get lost coming out of Eastern Guilford.

The Eastern offense will be led by QB Jason Davis who passed for 1,050 yards last season and ran for 800 more. Davis accounted for 8 TD’s air and 8 TD’s on the ground and he possesses 4.5 40 speed. RB Gerrod Herbin is back for the Wildcats and in 2007 he rushed for over 1,250 yards and scored 14 TD’s with his 4.4 speed leaving tacklers in the dust. Take a look at kicker Will Gann’s numbers from last season with 29-30 in PAT’s and 9 of 10 in field goal attempts. Gann is right up there with our area’s best local kickers in Matt Millisor of Page, Kasey Refern from Ragsdale, and Terrance Topps of Southeast Guilford.

Davis, Herbin and Gann will lead the EG Wildcat offense and they will get big help up front from offensive linemen D.J. Pennington and Sheldon Smith, both seniors and both three-year starters at 250 pounds-plus. Richard Wilson is a three-starter at linebacker and he will help DB Josh Morehead, 4.5 speed, anchor the EG defense. Morehead had 10 interceptions for Eastern in 2007.

Eastern and Southern should have one heck of a battle for second place in the North State conference, but Coach Loosemore and Coach Brown would be sure and tell you that they are forging on in their quest to catch the team at the top of the hill, the Reidsville Rams.

Here’s how we see the North State 2-A Conference stacking up this season:
#1) Reidsville
#2) Eastern Guilford
#3) Southern Guilford
#4) WS Atkins
#5) West Stokes
#6) McMichael(Michael has a new coach in Gary Whitman, formerly of Lexington and HP Central)

*****We hope to hear from the EG and SG people tomorrow night with scores on the games, SG at East Davidson and Rockingham County at EG. Please contact me at durhamandy@live.com if you can pass the scores our way and I will give you the number you need to call.*****
