The Friday Night Football Preview

We have been previewing the conferences over the last week and tonight the kids will be playing for real when that whistle blows at 7:30pm. The home teams will run through the paper banners with the school fight-song playing right before the start of the game.

The boys will be racing full steam ahead as they tear into that banner and let’s hope that none of the cheerleaders are holding the banner too tight and that one of the first guys to hit it ends up getting tackled by the banner before the game actually begins. It may sound crazy, but I have seen it happen once or twice over the years, or maybe one of the cheerleaders at the corner of the banner trips one of the football players as he comes around the corner.

Running through that banner will signify the start of a new football season and let’s look at the games in the GREENSBOROSports.com coverage area for tonight. We’ll pick the winners and list a possible score, but the scores don’t mean all that much, you have to get a win in your first game of the season, without the win you are in trouble right out of the gates.

Are there any easy games to predict?
No games tonight for Southeast Guilford, Northeast Guilford and High Point Andrews; so that wasn’t all that hard….But we do have:
Morehead at Ragsdale…Ragsdale by three TD’s with Romer at QB, Thomason at RB and the kicker Refern, Ragsdale should be OK even though they will miss DeSean Anderson. The Ragsdale line is tight. 35-14 for the final….

Page at WS Reynolds…RJ Reynolds returns their QB Jeremy Peterson and he is very, very good, although only 5’10, but he is very quick and fast, all in the same sentence. Will Newman of Page is one of the fastest kids I have seen and he can pass too with his primary target Brad Workinger. Gabe King and Tony Rustin are key defensive players and lineman Chris Jasperse is real big and he is smart. Matt Millisor is the top punter/kicker in the area and we give the edge to Page over Reynolds 28-17 and again Page must find a way to slow down Peterson.

WS Carver at Dudley…Dudley is chomping at the bit to play a real game and this will be a real good one, if for nothing else the atmosphere at Dudley’s Tarpley Stadium with Carver coming to town. Dudley has the best overall OL/DL in the area if not the entire state and Ricky Lewis Jr. is a proven winner, taking the Panthers to the State Title last season. Lewis is also the kicker and he won last year’s game at Carver with the PAT for a 7-6 Panther victory. Lewis and Dudley tonight 21-6 over Carver.

Western Guilford at Asheboro…Western has an high potent offense with high octane QB Corey McKenna and RB Brandon Easter and Coach Chris Causey is bright enough to know that you must play just enough defense to win ball games and let’s say Western does, 28-21 over Asheboro.

Southwest Guilford at Northwest Guilford….NWG has the offense ready and waiting with runningbacks Chris Kennedy and Sean Ples and that means the Vikings will be hard to stop. This is their game and the defenses may be in for a long night, NWG over SWG 35-20.

Rockingham County at Eastern Guilford…The Wildcats are another team is that is loaded on the offensive side of the ball and the ‘Cats face former Sports and Hobbies sales rep Lin Stadler and his RC Cougars. Jason Davis, Gerrod Herbin and Will Gann; get them the ball and they will score for Eastern. Eastern should win this one 28-14.

High Point Central at Glenn…HPC will be much better as the season moves on and QB Drew Adams gets more reps but it looks like Glenn will be too much for Central again with the Bobcats winning this one, 27-13.

Southern Guilford at East Davidson…Scotty Wayne should run like a mad-man and score at least 4 TD’s as the Storm storms lower Thomasville to take on the Golden Eagles and Southern with Wayne running strong bring back home a 33-21 victory.

Smith at WS Atkins…This could be tough. There is so much of the unknown. Smith will get better, but they are not there yet, Atkins 26-6.

Northern Guilford at Victory Christian in Charlotte…The NG Nighthawks are going to be good, but they are still soooo young and Victory has some big veterans with 2 players listed on the Top 30 list for the State of North Carolina. Northern has Allen from Grimsley, Harris from NEG, and McCain from Page but they need experience on the line against a team like Victory. Victory has the win by name before the game starts and they have it at the end too, 35-7 Victory.

Grimsley at Martinsville on Saturday at 1pm…The Whirlies will head up to Martinsville without David Ray, their top RB from 2007(Suspended, return? Coach’s decision) and RB Lay Lay Brown is down with an injury so that leads to an untested backfield with new QB Josh Patterson taking over under center. All in all Grimsley should be OK vs. Martinsville because they have Patterson who can run plus senior fullback Michael Dotts, other RB’s Eric Davidson, Gary Ziglar, and Torian Patterson, Josh’s younger brother. Grimsley needs to win this game and we feel like they will, 28-7. Look for James Scales III and Andre Oliver to have big games on defense, while Jordan Patterson should grade out as your top lineman.

*****Other big games from the area tonight include:
Eastern Alamance at Western Alamance and
East Forsyth at Rocky Mount(Rocky Mount is ranked #1 in the state in the Pre-Season 3-A poll.)*****

  1. I think you forgot Coach Helms is coaching the defense for HPC, you sure are no San Quienton Qualye.
