High School Football Saturday Morning Rewind

The rewind tapes are rolling and the George Michaels Sports Machine is on the web. We will begin our August 23 update with reports from our spotters out in the field, Page44 and Lee.

Page44 has the Page Pirates over the RJ Reynolds Demons 31-7. We received our updates throughout the night on AM950 from Page AD Rusty Lee and he mentioned the kid the from WS Reynolds that got hurt and the game was delayed 45 minutes to let the attendees deal with the injury. It was very severe and Page44 touches on that with this:
I don’t know all the stats details of the Page/RJR game, because i didn’t attend the game last night. But I do have some. The rest will just have to wait for the morning Greensboro News & Record Sports page. Lenny Gordon didn’t play much, if at all last night, because he’s nursing a sore hammy. But back up RB (Perry is his name, not sure on last name) stepped up and played great, with a 70+ yard TD on one play.

Will Newman had two passing TDs, one to Brad Workinger and one to Jeremy Collie, and one on the ground as well.Matt Millisor finished the game up with a 43 yard FG. The Page D shut out the Reynolds O, and Jeremy Peterson. Which is no easy task. The only TD Reynolds had last night, was off of a Newman fumble, recovered by the Reynolds D and ran for a TD.

The D played lights out and so did the O, other then the hick up. Also on a side note.. soph. linebacker for Reynolds was injured during the game. According to the Reynolds team doctor, Matt Gfeller was taken to the hospital and he was undergoing emergency brain surgery. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him, his family as well as the Reynolds team and school.

Just to add one more thing. The back up runningback for Page, Perry _____ (still don’t know his last name) runs a 4.3, and he has great size to go along with his speed. Lenny, being the big bruising back that he is (just at 6’0 215lbs.), sets up to be one of the strongest back fields i’ve seen at Page in a good long while. Add in Will Newman with this 4.5 speed at QB too. These 2 runningbacks are looking like a very strong duo.

Lee has the update for us on Ragsdale’s big win over Morehead at Jamestown.
Ragsdale played pretty well against Morehead coming out on top 48-0. Offense ran the ball prety well with Charles Thomason going well over 100 yards. Romer threw the ball well getting the ball in the hands of his playmakers. Starting defense only allowed one 1st down. Chris Armwood took an interception back 55 yards for a pick 6. Caleb Cates stripped a guy on a kickoff return for another turnover. Billy Stone and Walt Sparks led the defense in tackles as well as a strong game by the whole D-line led by Cedric Ellison.

Our overall record was 7-3 from last night with the hits on Page, Ragsdale, Dudley, Northwest, Eastern, Southern, and WS Atkins and the losses coming from HP Central, Western and Northern. We can still finish at 8-3 if Grimsley pulls off that win at Martinsville today with the 1pm start and we will have updates here at the site on that game.

Tim Romer threw four touchdown passes for Ragsdale in their romp over Morehead with two TD’s each to Ian Jenkins and Cedric Miller. We hope to get some more stats on the Page victory later in the day.

The Dudley Panthers jumped on top of WS Carver 20-0 and then held on to defeat the Yellowjackets 20-13. Dudley was up 2-0 early and then got three touchdowns from runningback Fred Overby to grab the win.

Northwest Guilford raced out to a 24-0 first quater lead and went on to wallop Southwest Guilford 42-0. Chris Kennedy had two TD’s on the ground for NWG. High Point Central pulled off a huge upset by knocking off Glenn 9-6 in overtime. Ricky Dowdy caught an eight yard touchdown pass from Bison Sophomore quarterback Drew Adams for the game-winner in the extra period. Glenn struck first in OT but could only come up with a field goal.

Eastern Guilford kicker Will Gann was 5-5 on PAT’s and he converted a 30 yard field goal as the Wildcats topped Rockingham County 46-14. ‘Cat QB Jason Davis ran for 2TD’s and passed for another and RB Gerrod Herbin had a 51 yard touchdown scamper. Southern Guilford got a TD pass from their new QB Darren Garcia and he also ran for two scores as SG took out East Davidson 36-10. RB Scotty Wayne had a long run of 73 yards for another Storm touchdown.

No details on this game yet, but WS Atkins squeaked out a 14-12 win over the Smith Golden Eagles in Coach Rodney Brewington’s debut for Smith. Maurice Harris and Keenan Allen, two transfers to the new varsity football program at Northen Guilford, helped lead the Nighthawks to a 21-7 victory over Victory Christian down in Charlotte. Harris scored a TD and Allen had a touchdown and two interceptions to pace the Nighthawks in the win. Nighthawk QB Rocco Scarfone tossed the TD pass to Allen. A big upset win for Northern and next week they will face Eastern Randolph.

I was hoping for bigger things from Western Guilford this season but the Hornets got tripped up 44-24 at Asheboro last evening and now WG has to get ready for Northwest next Friday.

If you have game details or a report for us on a game from last night, put it in the comment box and we will move them to the front page. Other big games in the area last night included Providence Grove winning in their first-ever game with their win over Randleman. Zeb Milliner, the QB transfer from Eastern Randolph, was the man for Coach Todd Shuping’s PG team. Eastern Alamance upset Western Alamance and Rocky Mount ripped East Forsyth.

Thanks to the guys(Page44 and Lee) for their reports and we can always use more. People want to know what’s going on and speaking of that, does Damon have anything for us that Southeast Guilford-Statesville scrimmage from this week.

  1. Perry Fryer took a draw play 68 yards for a touchdown on the Pirates second play from scrimmage, and Page made it look easy the rest of the way. It went ahead 14-0 on its second series when quarterback Will Newman ran 11 yards for a touchdown.
Page running attack that gained 250 yards on 37 carries and struggled to stop Newman, who was 10 of 15 passing for 162 yards and two touchdowns.
The Pirates went ahead 21-7 late in the second quarter when Newman rolled right and connected with Bradl Workinger for a 33 yard touchdown pass.
Early in the third quarter, Newman dumped a screen pass to Jeremy Collie, who slithered 32 yards through the defense for another touchdown. Matt Millisor added the final points for Page on a 26-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

Jeremy Peterson went 6 for 20 for 101 yards and was intercepted twice.

  2. Matt Gfeller, a sophomore linebacker from Reynolds, was injured when he was blocked on a running play with 9:50 left in the game. After lying on the field for nearly 40 minutes, he was taken by ambulance to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Chris Pinnix, an assistant athletics director at Reynolds, said an hour after the game that Principal Art Paschal told him: “(Gfeller) is in the hospital, and they are having ongoing evaluation to determine his status.”

A hospital spokeswoman said early this morning that Gfeller’s condition was undetermined.

  3. I took Andy’s advice and got out to Dudley game. The atmosphere was great and the place was packed. I must say that I was impressed with Dudley’s Defensive and Offensive lines. The News & Record had it right. They are definitely this teams’ strength. The 20 -13 score is misleading. This game wasn’t even close. Dudley’s defense held Carver’s offense in check all night long. Carver broke two big plays for touchdowns. With better tackling from Dudley’s secondary, the game is a shut out.

Other than Dudley’s lines, I was impressed with Dudley’s running back, Fred Overby. The kid runs hard and has a nose for the end zone. Dudley’s Senior QB definitely looks like a leader out there. He ran the offense well and looked comfortable. I do think the verdict is still out on the Panther secondary. It’s tough to tell how good these kids are because Carver’s QB wasn’t that accurate and the Panther D-line was dominate. Dudley looks good, but they have work to do in order to defend that State Title.

  4. I must apologize. I didn’t completely read the update posted above. I would like to ask those of you who believe in power of prayer to pray for Matt Gfeller and his family. We want all our kids to get back up.

  5. sry 2 get off subject but anyone here surprised by the EG and rockingham county score? I went to the game nd they totally dominated from the first snap.
