High School Football Roundup and Preview for Friday August 29

Grimsley over Northern Durham 35-14 last night in what was a real team effort and the Whirlies were very pleased with the return of RB’s Lay Lay Brown and David Ray to the lineup. QB Josh Patterson had a big game for Grimsley and kicker Joe Rossabi was 5-5 in PAT’s and that takes his total to 12-12 for the young season. Grimsley goes to (2-0) with the win and you can read the detailed rundown of the entire game in Paul Lambeth’s post from last night here on the site. Also check out Tom Keller’s article at the News and Record or go on-line at www.news-record.com.

Tonight we have another lineup of key games and we have more on the slate this week than what we had back in week number one.

Northeast Guilford will get their season started by hosting the Page Pirates in what should be a big-time matchup at Bill Bookout Stadium in McLeansville. Page went through a lifetime of emotional stress in last week’s win at WS Reynolds as we take into consideration all of the events surrounding that game which saw Matt Gfeller of Reynolds get critically injured and we hope Page will be able to put the football back in focus this week. I think Page will be fine with QB Will Newman and kicker Matt Millisor leading the way, and they should beat NEG 28-14. Northeast will be quick and they are always tough with Coach Tommy Pursley at the helm, but I think Page has too much and that the Pirates have a rallying cry heading into this game. Gabe King and Tony Rustin should lead the Page defense.

Southeast Guilford plays their first game of the 2008 season as they travel to Eastern Guilford to take on the (1-0) Wildcats. SEG has Terrance Topps and they will need to be on top of their game to beat a very good EG team with the ‘Cats QB Jason Davis, RB Gerrod Herbin, and K Will Gann. SEG is lead by James Peguese and Brian Webb on defense and I’ll give the edge to SEG because of the multi-talented Topps. EG won this battle last year at SEG, but I’ll take SEG tonight 21-17.

Dudley is on the road at Richmond County and the Panthers are meeting the big school 4-A Raiders on their turf at Rockingham. Richmond County has tons of tradition and they will bring in one of the largest home crowds in the state but let’s stick with Dudley with Ricky Lewis Jr. and Fred Overby looking to bring a victory back to Greensboro. Dudley’s “O” and “D” lines will have to step it up and they will in Dudley’s 14-7 win over Richmond County.

Ragsdale goes to Southwest Guilford in what is a very large rivalry game, but it should not be a contest at all on the field, as Ragsdale is now in a class of their own after Tiger quarterback Tim Romer’s coming out party last Friday night. After what Ragsdale did to Morehead and with what Northwest did against Southwest, this will be a runaway, with Ragsdale winning 49-0.

High Point Andrews kicks off their season at home versus the Smith Golden Eagles and with the way HPA closed out last year(very strong) and with the true Athlete Tony Washington and QB Jordan Reid returning, Andrews should be in the driver’s seat for this game. Smith played WS Atkins tough last week before falling 14-12 but Andrews at home in HP will be too much again tonight for Smith as the Raiders beat the Eagles 27-12.

Northwest Guilford rolls into Western Guilford in a road trip that should take all of 10 minutes from Alcorn Road to Friendway Drive off of West Friendly Avenue. NWG looked strong last week versus Southwest and Western struggled against Asheboro. Is Northwest for real with Chris Kennedy and Sean Ples or can Western pull it off on their field with Corey McKenna and Brandon Easter? I’ll take NWG by 7, 24-17.

Northern Guilford will play their first-ever home football game tonight as they prepare to host the Wildcats of Eastern Randolph. ER goes to Northern with the Nighthawks coming off of a huge road win at Victory Christian last Friday night and ER lost to Sun Valley. NG has offense with Keenan Allen, Maurice Harris, Christian McCain, Rocco Scarfone and Bob Hicks and I’ll now take Northern till they lose and we’ll say they will win tonight’s game to go to (2-0) with a score of 28-13. We can not underestimate the power and experience of Nighthawk head coach Johnny Roscoe.

Burlington Williams travels to High Point Central with the Black Bison coming off of that 9-6 overtime win last week over Glenn. Williams was (2-9/0-5) last season so look for Drew Adams to get it going early with Desmion Kennedy and company being the recipiants. Defensive star Ricky Dowdy had the TD catch to win it last week in OT and look for Dowdy to cause all kinds of problems tonight for the Williams Bulldogs offense. HPC with the win, 27-7.

Providence Grove, the new school with the veteran coach in Todd Shuping, topped Randleman last week 20-14 and this evening Southern Guilford makes the trip down 220 South to face the RHS Tigers and the Storm with RB Scotty Wayne and QB Darren Garcia will take back a victory as they defeat Randleman 24-14. The Storm will be one of the area’s top 2-A teams along with Eastern Guilford before season’s end.

  1. Page’s starting defensive end #99 was ejected for fighting in last week’s game at Reynolds and will be sitting out 2 games.
