THE TOP GUARDS: 2008-09 Basketball Season

Helen Terry Sr. Dudley: Very fast and quick. Has the ability to set up and knock down the three pointer. Player of the Year in Conference, Second Team All Area Selection and should duplicate that this upcoming season. Led team to the Regionals and could bring home the State trophy this year. Average 18 ppg this past year.Had a career high 32 points in win against Bishop Mcguiness. A lower to mid major prospect who could vault to a high major with a super year. A four tier player. (Points, Assists, Steals). 18 ppg, 6 assts, 4 stls

Amy Beasley Sr. South East: Very crafty. Makes good decisions and good passes. Player of Year in Conference, All Area Selection. Good shooter when spotted up. Shows good leadership. Led team to Sectionals. Will be counted on heavily this year. As she goes is how South East goes. Could be a low major to mid major prospect but may lean more to softball. Three tier player. 13.5 ppg, 7.5 assts, 3.2 stls

Beth Miller Sr. Graham: Very smart field general that is the leader of super power Graham. Knows how to get ball to the right people. An up tempo player that makes things happen. Nice medium range shooter. Can create havoc for opposition on the defensive end. Player of the Year and All Region. Should have a great senior year. Would be a nice low to mid major field general for a respective college. Tough minded. A three player. 11.5 ppg, 6 assts, 3.5 stls

Whitney Knight Soph: Bishop Mcguiness: Probably the tallest guard in the City or State. Plays in a system that wins State Championships. Has a nice shot and can create matchup problems. Still very young and will be the most sort after players in the country in the years to come. Has all the tools and will garner most of the headlines as major colleges await her decision. Four tier player:( points, rebounds, steals, Blocks ) 9 ppg, 5rebs, 3.5 assts, 3 bpg.

Capricia Smalls Jr. Eastern Guilford: The most skilled guard in the city that is hard to defend. Has the ability to break a defender down and dish off at the same time. Nice mid range pulled up shot and can hit beyond the arch. Gets to the free throw line frequently and converts. Honorable MentionAll conference and Honorable mention All region performer to years straight. Was an All Conference and Honorable Mention All area performer as a ninth grader. Made the Holiday Classic All Tournament Team both years. May not get the publicity as many of the previous guards mentioned, but can hold her own against any of them. A high major college caliber player. One of the best shot blocking players in the City and State. Single handedly destroyed Northeast with 26 points in an upset win. A five tier player 10.5 ppg, 5.1 assts, 5 rpg, 2.5 bpg, 2.5 stls

Tonisha Baker Sr. Andrews: Very athletic and quick. Has the ability to take over a game. Should be one of the best this year. Must continue to get other teammates involved. Has the tenacity and drive towards winning. All conference and Second team All Area performer that will do it again. Made the Wachovia Holiday Classic all-tournament team. Definately a mid major or high major prospects. A three tier player. 17 ppg, 3 rpg, 3 spg.

Brionna Patterson Jr. Dudley: Quick and loves to attack the basket. Can hit the mid range jumper and step out side the arch and hit the three. Plays great defense and is very adapt at getting steals for transition baskets. Needs to be more consistant on the scoring end and should be in the 12 to 14 point range. All Conference performer. Definately is a low to mid major prospect that could become higher with another year of development. Combines with Helen to have the quickest back court in the City and State. All conference performer. Three tier player. 9.5 ppg, 3.2 apg, 3.3 spg

Ashley Debose Jr. Smith ?: Could be the best guard in the city. Showed what she was capable of when she help Smith upset Dudley in the Christmas tournament. When she is on her game there is no one in the city that can guard her. If she finally figures it out, there will be many college programs that would want her services. A four tier player that has a lot of question marks.

Krystal Moore Sr. Rockingham: Pure shooter who has a nice touch. Was an All AreaThird team selection. MVP of the Reidsville Holiday Classic. Holds school record with 41 points and 9 three pointers made in a game. Should get some mid major college looks this year and could challenge Helen Terry for conference player of the year. A three tier player. 17 ppg, 4 assts, 4 steals.

Jada Alvarado Sr. River Mill: One of the best players in the area that does a lot of things well. She scores, rebounds, assist, steal and runs a team well. She average 9.4 points this past season and led the team in just about every category. An All conference selection and Second team All Region. Her name should rise to the top of the charts this year as she embark on her final season either at River Mill or some where else. A low to mid major player. A four tier player.

Kelley Tessitore Northern Guilford: Did an outstanding job of running Northerns offense in the schools first year of competition. Made the All Conference Team and was Honorable Mention All Area. Good shooter and connects consistently at the charity stripe. Should be one of the areas top ten players this year and help lead Northern deeper in to the playoffs. A two tier player that could be a low major to division three player. Scoring , assists.

THE SLEEPERS: ( These are the ones that are not yet up to the top of the charts but they can have an impact on a game)

Hannah McIntosh Jr. Northwest: Was one of their main players when they got off to a super start. Has a nice shot when she gets open looks. Handles the ball well and will be one of the prominent players that play key roles this year for her team. Was an All Conference and Honorable Mention All Area selection. Has the ability to knock down 20 or more points on any given night. She beats out teammate Gretchen Bennett for this spot by a slim margin A low to mid major college prospect at this stage. A three tier player. Points, Assists, Steals.

Brittany Drew Soph. Page: Sat in the shadows behind Jasmine Gill (Boston College signee), Nene Whitaker ( Virginia Emanni signee) and Bjorn Fonville. She gets her chance to shine this year with some good returning players Chevana Pickard and Portia Oakley. Will be tested early and has the ability to deliver. Can knock down the 10 to 15 foot shots as well as behind the arch. Good free throw shooter. Had a great camp at UNCG and help spearhead a Greensboro Galaxy squad that reached the Division One Nationals Classic Championship game in Tennessee this past summer. Was the catalyst when they won the Division Two Championship last year. In some early action for Page she had 11 points 5 assts in a game against North Davidson. Becuase of a lot of playing time her numbers could look like the ones from AAU: 13.7 ppg, 4.2 assts, 3.3 rebs and 1.7 spg. Would not be surprise if she makes All Conference this year. A three tier player. Low major college to division two college prospect at this stage.

Jordan Lanham Soph Grimsley: Was fortunate to be on a team that was loaded with Division One prospects and got the chance to play some key minutes. Will be counted on heavily to lead a team that has dominated for three years. Her AAU experience with the Gators which made it to the Nationals second round should provide some early confidence. Handles the ball well but needs to get a tadbit stronger which will come in time. Has the height that should allow her to be in position to block shots from the guard position. Did lead the team in taking charges this past year. If Grimsley is going to have the success that it has had over the years she has to become one of the main catalyst. That might be a lot to ask at the moment.A division two to low major prospect. A three tier player. Points, Assists, Charges.

Miranda Jenkins Soph Eastern Guilford: Was on the sleeper list last year and will remain on it again because she does not possess the flair that would leave one in awe with flashy moves. A very crafty player whom was used primarily as a reserve for most of the season. Does not strike fear in an opposition at first glance but tends to play with a passion that leads to winning. Not afraid to take the big shot and has an unique ability to block a lot of shots. A cumbo guard that rebounds well and can create match up problems. Teamed up with Capricia Small to have a pretty solid back court for Eastern Guilford. During Sectional playoffs in three games she average 26.3 ppg, 7.7 rebs, 8.0 apg, 5.0 bpg, 2.7 spg. Selected to First Team All Conference, First Team All Tournament Team and Honorable Mention All Regional Team. Had season High of 33 points against Goldsboro in the State Playoffs. Hit for 27 against NW Halifax in States playoff with the winning shot with three seconds left in an upset win against the States number 5th ranked team.Teamed up with Brittany Drew (Page) and Desiree Drayton (Dudley) in AAU for Galaxy. A division two to low major college prospect. Five tier player: 12 ppg, 5.0 assts, 4.8 rebs, 2.2 stls, 2.1 bpg.

Jessica Farr Sr. Dudley: A quiet leader on a team that is headed by Helen Terry and Brionna Patterson. She is the defensive specialist who gets the tough assigments and delivers. Had a season high of 18 points against Smith and could be one of the main key factors in how far Dudley advances this year. Porsha Roach and her are tied for this sleeper spot with a slight nod going to Jessica. A division two to low major college prospect if she chooses basketball over track. A two tier player. Scoring, steals.

Najet Ouardad Sr. Forsyth Country Day: Probably is the most complete point guard in the area that understands the position and demonstrates it on the court. Handles the ball well and mixes speed and quickness to out smart opponents. A great defensive presence that puts pressure on the ball 90 feet. She is like a coach on the floor. Forsyth success is predicated on what she does. The floor general understands the game. An All Conference selection that should have made the First or Second Team All Area. She should be a shew in this year. Despite her size, she is a mid major to high major college prospect. A three tier player. Scoring, assists steals.

  1. FWIW – Tonisha Baker @ Andrews is Toney Baker’s little sister. He has a younger brother too – I wonder if he’s playing football? Good genes in that family.
