Guilford College Men’s Soccer Final – Ferrum 3, Guilford 0

Ferrum, Va. (9-10-08) — Ferrum College posted a 3-0 shutout win Tuesday afternoon over Guilford College in a nonconference men’s soccer match.

Following a scoreless first half, Ferrum junior Jason Haynes was taken down inside the box at the 47:24 mark and awarded a penalty kick. Haynes drilled the kick past Guilford keeper Peter Truitt to put the Panthers (2-2) on the board.

Senior Seth Hill then lofted a ball from the far right side of the field and over Truitt’s head in the 66th minute for a 2-0 Panthers’ lead. Freshman Tamiko Aptsiauri scored Ferrum’s final goal in the 87th minute.

Goalie Chris Taylor picked up his second shutout this season for Ferrum, making seven saves in 90 minutes of play. Truitt made five saves for the Quakers, also playing the full 90 minutes.

Guilford (0-3) edged Ferrum in corner kicks, 5-4. The two teams were even with 21 shots each, a season high for the Quakers. Ferrum (2-2) returns to action Saturday, Sept. 13 with a road trip to Elkins, W.Va., to face NCAA Division II opponent Davis & Elkins College at 1 p.m. Guilford visits cross-town-rival Greensboro College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
