HS football for 9/12 and AM950 call for tonight

We will have the Ragsdale at Page game on AM950 this evening with updates on Eastern Guilford at Western Guilford, Southern Guilford at Southeast Guilford, Grimsley at High Point Central, and Smith at Dudley……It all gets under way with the Pre-game at 7pm and then the kickoff at 7:30 plus the updates throughout the night during the Page-Ragsdale contest.

Tonight’s Guilford County schedule reads like this:
Ragsdale at Page and we will take Page 28-14…(Looking over this Ragsdale roster I recognize quite a few names. Nick Mearite, Kyle Brandenburg, DeSean Anderson, Casey Redfern, Walt Sparks, Joey Finison, Billy Stone, Cedric Ellison, and Ian Jenkins plus the new names of Tim Romer and Charles Thomasson….I remember many of the names from previous Tiger football and baseball teams.)

Smith at Dudley with Dudley winning 35-0…

Grimsley at High Point Andrews and James Scales III, David Ray and Lay Lay Brown will have to come up big so Grimlsey can win this 21-13…

Eastern Guilford at Western Guilford as the EG Wildcats enter at (3-0) with their best start in years and they should go home 31-20 winnners…

Southern Guilford at Southeast Guilford and time for the Falcons to step up and win this one at home although we know that Scotty Wayne and Darren Garcia will be going at it hard for SG, but we still feel that Tivon Clark can burst through and SEG wins it 28-7…

Northeast Guilford at Northwest Guilford with NWG the home favorite against an NEG squad that hasn’t gone (0-3) to start the season since back when Daniel Barrow was the Rams’ head coach, but tonight we have NWG pulling through with the 21-14 win over NEG…

High Point Central at Wake Forest-Rolesville and if you remember last year WFR came to High Point and creamed HPC but it will be much closer this year with WFR over HPC 35-21…

Fayetteville Christian at Northern Guilford where the Nighthawks are going to be the team to beat with the NG (3-0) mark that will be (4-0) by 7:35pm with NG rolling over FC 49-7.

Southwest Guilford at Ledford and you might just say that SWG Cowboys are the hardest team around to figure out, but tonight we will give them a chance as they defeat Ledford 21-14 and here I go again staying with one of our Guilford County teams on the road in a game where everyone is saying, “What’s Up with SWG?”

  1. Sounds good you can be the monitor and how did the sound come through when we got to Chris and Brad from Page during last night’s Football in Focus Show. I heard we had some early problems but that we got them cleared up and when did the audio start coming through???

Did we get it done with Page and did any EG come through…I was told we missed all of Smith and we will have them back on soon to give them their shot in the arm and again when the sound start coming through????

  2. From what i saw, the sound started working at about 20 mins. into the show. I think half of EG and all of Page.

  3. I would agree with your picking Page. Will Newman really looks sharp. Great footwork. He has great pocket presence and makes plays with his feet. He’s a smart player, a sr. and a coaches son. He’s groomed himself into an excellent football player. Page has good lines (maybe not what NW has but still very good). Page has good backs and a very solid D. Milisor is a great kicker. No use in ragsdale practicing kickoff returns. They won’t get a ball in teh field of play. Matt is a weapon. Great all ’round team. It would take a perfect game from Ragsdale to win. Ragsdale just got by SW and NW. One thing I will say, the Ragsdale boys love playing together. Great friendships and they trust each other. They all play hard for each other. Tight group of boys. But it will take more than that to get past Page.

  4. It will definetly be a good game. But, I think Page will control the offensive and defensive lines. The Page defense in general is very fast and athletic, I’d say the best in the area behind Dudley. Look for Tony Rustin (DT) and Gabe King (DE) to put loads of pressure on Romer.

  5. Joe, I would have to agree with your accessment. Saw #99 at the JV game last night. He’s a big man.

Speaking of JV, Ragsdale won a turnover marred game 20-14. Ragsdale had some INT’s and Page had some fumbles. #32 for Page ran very well. Powerful and fast. Had several long runs and had a 60 yarder called back. Thomasson for Ragsdale ran very well also. Those two were the dominant players on the field. #10 for Page also looked good.

  6. and pull off the upset they did!

What a fantastic incredible hard fought game tonight at Page as Ragsdale took a 21-14 win over an undefeated top ten Page team. Hard fought doesn’t hardly do justice to the defense on display tonight. Especially by the Ragsdale D, who with the exception of one big play by Will Newman, shut down the Pirate offense.

The start didn’t look good as Newman took a QB counter on the second play from third play from scrimmage for a 68 yard TD run. It’s hard to believe though, that would be the last and only time the Page offense would score. The Ragsdale offense was having a tough time getting on track as the big Page defensive line was making plays. So it was up to the D to get things started as Page went for it on 4th and five from the Ragsdale 35. Walt Sparks stepped in front of a Newman pass and took the INT back 63 yards to the seven. One play was all it took for Charles Thomasson to score and the game was tied 7-7 with four minutes left in the first.

Both defenses settled in and made stops but Page made Ragsdale pay on a booming Casey Redfern punt as Thun Phac got great blocks and hit the seam for a 95 yard punt return as Page went up 14-7. Phac was a dangerous return man all night but Ragsdale made sure he didn’t get to the end zone again. Both defenses continued to play stingy, but Ragsdale made the drive of the game as they were able to score with six seconds in the half on as Tim Romer found Luke Sonricker open in the back of the end zone on a ten yard TD pass. Ragsdale went for two after Page was offside and Romer found Ian Jenkins for a 15-14 lead that the defense would hold up.

Ragsdale D gave Will Newman and Page fits all second half. Page couldn’t run the ball and did a great job containing Newman’s runs. Page had some drops and Newman was chased around making throws that were often high and broken up by Ragsdale. The only scoring drive in the half came as Romer again found Sonricker open behind the Page D on a 41 yard strike with 3 minutes left in the third. Page kept putting a linebacker on Sonricker and that LB was leaving him open all night. Ragsdale faked a kick and looked to convert another 2 pt pass to Jenkins but he had stepped out of bounds so the score stayed 21-14.

Ragsdale had to make two stops late in the 4th as they stopped Page on a fourth and goal with about three minutes left ( and also knocked Newman out of the game). Then as the game wound under a minute, Jonathan Ashworth made a big interception to seal the deal.

A very scary and somber moment occurred with about a minute left as Ragsdale DE Keith Handford broke his leg and delayed the game for over thirty minutes ( someone please tell me why there was no ambulance on site). That is a tough loss for Ragsdale and the junior lineman. Handford had played a great game all night.

One final note – Page made some DIRTY plays tonight which were totally unnecessary. They ripped Romer’s helmet off his head on one face mask and on Ashworth’s game saving INT a Page player again with a flagrant facemask after he was on the ground. Player should have been tossed for that one.

Anyway – great game and hats off to the Ragsdale D who came up big all night long. Walt Sparks, Billy Stone, Nick Mearite, Handford, Jon and Josh Ashworth – all those players and more played their butts off tonight. And big thumbs up to the Ragsdale O-line who gave Romer time to throw most of the night.

    4-0! Grimsley next at home.
