College Football Final – Guilford 34, Methodist 33

Greensboro, N.C. (9-13-08) – Guilford College held on to defeat visiting Methodist University Saturday night, 34-33, when a high snap resulted in a missed point-after kick attempt late in the game.

The Monarchs took advantage of a pair of late Guilford turnovers and trimmed a 34-20 deficit down to 34-33 after BJ Parrish scored on a nine-yard reception from Erik Teague (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville) with 3:17 left in regulation. The Monarchs, who struggled with snaps on two previous point-after attempts, snapped the ball high. It was recovered by kicker Mario Miralles, who was tackled by Guilford’s R.J. Lassiter.

The Quakers’ Justin Parker (Greensboro, N.C./Southern Guilford) ran for two first downs on the ensuing possession as Guilford ran down the clock for sixth win in eight meetings with the Monarchs. Parker finished with a game and career-high 103 rushing yards on 14 carries, including a one-yard plunge just before halftime that gave the hosts a 13-12 edge.

Guilford’s Josh Vogelbach completed 21 of 43 passes for 301 yards and three second-half touchdowns that rallied the Quakers from a 20-13 deficit. His 40-yard strike to junior Chad Kastor tied the game at 20 and his 63-yard bomb to Kevin Vaughn gave the Quakers a 27-20 lead. He tossed a 16-yard scoring strike to Hagen Miller early in the fourth to make it a 34-20 game.

Teague, the son of former Guilford football player Jimmy Teague, paced the Monarchs’ offense with 98 rushing yards on 16 carries. He also completed 18 of 29 passes for 169 yards and two scores. His one-yard scoring plunge on fourth down with 6:03 remaining made it a 34-27 game.
