Wildcats handle Hornets 24-0, move to 4-0

Friday night at Western Guilford Eastern Guilford used 3 TD runs by Gerrod Herbin and the defense forced 7 turnovers to pace the Wildcats to the win.

Western Guilford had their chances, especially in the first half. On their opening possesion the Hornets moved inside the Eastern twenty on to have the drive short-circuit with a fumble. Eastern appeared to be on their way to making the Hornets pay for the miscue but a seven minute plus drive was bogged down by a holding call in the red zone and Will Gann had a 41 yard FG attempt blocked to keep the game scoreless.

Midway thru the 2nd period however Eastern broke thru as a Derrick Holbrook interception (one of two he would have on the evening) was turned into a 4 play 23 yard drive that ended in a 12yd Herbin run. Western responded by driving the length of the field in the final moments of the first half but the 18 play 76 yard drive would fail to produce points as Cedrick Johnson intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it to the 35 as the half expired allowing Eastern to hold their edge.

After the break Eastern took the 2nd half kickoff and drove 59yds in 11 plays as Herbin extended the lead with a 4yd run. On the ensuing kickoff a big return by Western went awry when kicker Will Gann desperation tackle forced a fumble that the Wildcats recovered at the Western 43. Seven plays and nineteen yards later Gann booted a 41yarder to extend the lead to 17-0,.

Early in the final period the final threat from Western was repelled by another interception in the end zone. Eastern followed it with a 8 play 80yd march in just over four minutes which ended in a 20yd Herbin run for the final tally of the evening.

Eastern moves to a suprising 4-0 Western drops to 1-3. Eastern has next week off while Western will seek to regroup with a trip to struggling Southwest Guilford.
