Guilford College Women’s Soccer Final – Methodist 3, Guilford 1

Greensboro, N.C. (9-17-08) – Erica Nath scored two of Methodist University’s three second-half goals as the visiting Monarchs rallied past Guilford College, 3-1, in a nonconference soccer match Wednesday afternoon.

The host Quakers (2-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead on junior Bree Vohs’ first goal of the season 13:12 into the match.

Guilford’s lead held until just over three minutes into the second half, when Ashley Kolano knocked in a ball from close range. Quaker’ netminder Amber Stapler could not hang onto a Monarchs’ corner kick and Kolano was there to bang the ball across the line.

Methodist (2-4) took the lead for good when Nath converted a through ball from Christine Ellington and slotted it past Stapler from close range.

After Guilford’s Lauren Matthews’ game-tying effort bounced a long shot off the underside of the crossbar, Nath added an insurance tally in the 73rd minute off a long pass from Amber Jurkovac.

Stapler finished with seven saves. Methodist rookie Sara Altman made eight stops. The Monarchs outshot Guilford, 23-20.

Guilford returns to action Saturday at Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Eastern Mennonite University at 1:00 p.m.
