HS Football Saturday morning rewind

There were not too many upsets last evening, but there were once again, some very close games. If anyone has any video footage out there, send us an E-mail to durhamandy@live.com and we can try and come up with another FedEx Ground Play/Player of the Week. Terrance Topps may be working to retire this award with his second straight week of heroics for Southeast Guilford in their 10-8 win over NWG.

The picks record for this week was 7-1 and the season total climbs to 39-8 with week number six staring us in the face already. We have updates on the site from Joe Barile, Doug Cockman, Bruce Bullington, Paul Lambeth and comments from Greg, Mark, Ray Krebbs and others on last night’s games. I heard Jim Young, now formerly of the News and Record; this past week subbing for Adam Gold on 850 the Buzz out of Raleigh, and now Jim Young has climbed on board at one of the ACC web sites. It will be a very busy fall for Rob Daniels of the N&R as he tracks all the college football.

Joe, Doug, Bruce, and Paul taking care of business, and as for the other games in the HS Spotlight from last evening, we observe one key fact, that the records don’t lie. Northeast Guilford is (0-4) and Eastern Randolph is now (0-5). That requires a double-take.

Northern Guilford lost for the first time this season as they fell at home to the East Lincoln Mustangs 20-7. I did my pre-game research on East Lincoln and found out they were (10-5) overall last year and went deep into the playoffs, but I still had to stick with Northern until they absorbed their first loss and now it has happened.

Joe had the Greensboro City Championship with Dudley and Page and we had Greg over in High Point for the Central-Andrews game which decided the HP City Title. The title goes to HPA with their 23-16 win over HPC. We had at least 3 comments that came in here at the blog yesterday, saying that HP Andrews was the bomb, and I see that they are. Central fans tell me they would have won the Max Meeks/Larry Craven Trophy if the Bison quarterback Drew Adams would have been able to stay in the game. Adams threw 2 TD passes but he got knocked out of the contest late the 4th quarter. Andrews fans are saying that Adams needs to transfer over to the Raiders if he wants to play for a real team, but other insiders are telling us that Andrews has a freshman QB on the JV team that is going to break every record that Johnny Evans set back in the 70’s and all of those records are still standing at HPA today. Jordan Reid and Tony Washington are All-Sate candidates for HP Andrews this season and don’t be surprised if Washington makes the First-Team.

High Point Andrews insider Jeff Summey says watch out for the Red Raiders and the word on the street is to keep a watch on the area 3-A races, they may be the best in the State. HP Andrews, Ragsdale, Southeast Guilford, and the Dudley Panthers. Who cares about the rest, we have the best right here in Guilford County and Locktoberfest is going to be extra special this year. Ragsdale goes to Southeast this Friday to get the ball rolling in September and who will be better? SEG, Ragsdale, HPA, or Dudley????? Line ’em up and let them play……

Western Guilford made us a winner with their 32-27 come-from-behind win over Southwest Guilford. Julius Hooks ran a late kickoff back 95 yards for the game-winning touchdown and SWG falls to (0-5) while WG improves to (2-3). Hooks, QB Corey McKenna, RB Brandon Easter and RB Josh Lowe all had big-time games for the WG Hornets.

Southern Guilford, behind the 4 TD’s from Scotty Wayne, rolled over Southwestern Randolph 41-7 and this game was a blow-out and we thought it might be close with both SG and SWR coming in at (3-1). The Storm are a convincing (4-1) with Wayne’s two rushing touchdowns and the other two coming on passes from SG QB Darren Garcia. Wayne finished with 110 yards on the ground and 91 yards on just three receptions.

We touched on it earlier and the results are in for NEG, now standing at (0-4) after last night’s 39-7 loss to Reidsville. They say the Ram parents are rumbling out at NEG, but they better keep their mouths shut and just look up on the back of the Bill Bookout Stadium and observe all that Ram coach Tommy Pursley has accomplished in his time with this team. Give TP and his staff a break, you have to have a down year sometime.

We will close out this week by saying. “Here comes East Forsyth”. The EF Eagles topped Mount Tabor last night to move to (5-0) and they were led by Danny O’Brien in the win over Hunter Furr and the MT Spartans. Late in the game DOB got knocked out and the backup QB had to come in for EF to help close out the victory.
