Guilford College Announces 2008-09 Men’s Basketball Schedule

Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College men’s basketball coach Tom Palombo announced the Quakers’ 2008-09 schedule Tuesday. The slate includes the first matchup with neighboring Greensboro College in Ragan-Brown Field House since 1994, a two-game tournament at the University of Texas-Dallas and a contest with 2008 NCAA Division III Tournament participant Averett University.

Guilford hosts the heated rivalry between the Quakers and the Pride for the first time since 1994 in its home opener Nov. 19. Last year’s matchup at Greensboro resulted in the Pride’s first win over Guilford since 2002. Greensboro handed the Quakers a 71-66 loss on its way to its first appearance in the USA South Conference Tournament final. The teams played their annual meeting in the Greensboro Coliseum from 1995-2006.

The Quakers travel west Nov. 21-22 to participate in the University of Texas-Dallas Tournament. In the Quakers’ first men’s basketball trip to Texas, Guilford will play UT-Tyler and UT-Dallas.

Guilford meets fellow 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Averett in the Cougar Den Nov. 25. In last year’s meeting, the Quakers defeated Averett, 83-62, in Ragan-Brown Field House. The Cougars earned their second consecutive USA South Athletic Conference Tournament title in 2008.

Guilford returns two starters from last year’s 24-5 team. Led by two-time D3hoops.com First Team All-American selection Ben Strong ’08, the Quakers won their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) regular-season and tournament titles. Guilford erased an 18-point second-half deficit to defeat the reigning conference champions Virginia Wesleyan College, 91-80, and claim the league’s automatic NCAA tournament berth. This season marks the first of a new ODAC schedule with two divisions and 16 league games instead of 20. The ODAC Tournament will be held Feb 24-March 1 at the Salem (Va.) Civic Center.
