Hampden-Sydney, Va. (9-27-08) – Corey Sedlar threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns in Hampden-Sydney College’s 35-14 win over visiting Guilford College in Saturday’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.
Guilford quarterback Josh Vogelbach set three NCAA Division III career passing records in the loss. He completed 40-of-59 passes for 383 yards, setting national standards for pass completions (1,037), pass attempts (1,721) and 300-yard passing games (24).
The Tigers (4-0, 1-0 ODAC) jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead to claim their ninth straight win over Guilford. Hampden-Sydney recovered a fumble on Guilford’s first play, which set up a 12-yard Sedlar to Travis Wertz scoring toss and a 7-0 Tigers’ lead 31 seconds into the game.
Kevin Morrison picked off Vogelbach on the Quakers’ second offensive play and Hampden-Sydney capitalized again on the first of two touchdown receptions by Adam Gillette. The six-yard completion capped a six-play drive and gave the Tigers a 14-0 edge with 11:43 left in the first quarter. Sedlar hit Gillette from 17 yards out midway through the period, which led to a 21-0 Hampden-Sydney edge.
A three-yard scoring run early in the second half gave the hosts a 28-0 lead. The Quakers rallied in the second half on a Vogelbach’s five-yard touchdown run and a three-yard scoring plunge by Justin Parker 1:41 before halftime.
Hampden-Sydney scored on its first second-half possession on rookie Kirk Rohle’s one-yard run.
The Tigers’ defense held Guilford scoreless on three second-half drives inside the Hampden-Sydney 20-yard line. The Quakers (2-2, 0-2 ODAC) twice turned the ball over on downs and once on an interception.
Despite missing senior running back Josh Simpson, the nation’s second-ranked all-purpose yardage back, the Tigers rolled up 434 total offensive yards. Williams finished with a game-high 69 rushing yards on 13 carrries. Sedlar completed 29-of-47 passes for Hampden-Sydney, six to Gillette and six to Zach Miller. Craig Warnement added 51 rushing yards and four catches for 34 yards. Michael Ware led the team with 11 tackles.
Guilford’s Kevin Vaughn made a game-high nine catches for 117 yards while teammate Chad Kastor finished with nine grabs for 64 yards. Justin Parker (8-41) and Tyler Hasty (7-97) both set career receiving highs.
The Quakers return to action Friday (10/3) against visiting Southern Virginia University at 7:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center. Hampden-Sydney plays at league-rival Bridgewater College Saturday (10/4).
