College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 4, Randolph-Macon 3

Ashland, Va. (9-27-08) – Scott Meguid’s (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) goal in the 71st minute lifted Guilford College to its first men’s soccer win of the season Saturday, 4-3, at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)-rival Randolph-Macon College.

Meguid’s first goal of 2008 gave the Quakers (1-7, 1-1 ODAC) a 4-0 lead, but the Yellow Jackets (2-6-1, 1-1-1 ODAC) scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to narrow the margin. Scott Landolt started the comeback in the 81st minute with an unassisted goal and set up Jon Fernandez’ tally just under six minutes later to make it a 4-2 game. Rick Hebert scored 50 seconds after Fernandez and suddenly it was a 4-3 match with 2:44 remaining regulation. Guilford survived the final moments and ended a 12-match losing skid that dated to 2007.

Guilford freshman Jordan Alexander (Mandeville, La./Covington (Va.)) scored his first two college goals, including the opening score 4:07 into the contest. Senior Dan Etter tallied off a Hunter Wilson assist later in the period as Guilford matched its goal output of its first seven games in the first half alone. Alexander’s second goal, off a Hugh Griffis feed, made it 3-0 Quakers early in the second half.

Randolph-Macon outshot Guilford, 21-8, but Quakers’ rookie Peter Truitt (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) made a career-high 11 saves in goal. Matty Rocawich has two stops between the pipes for Randolph-Macon.
