College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 5, Averett 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. (10-7-08) – Jordan Alexander scored twice in the first eight minutes to help Guilford College to a 5-0 men’s soccer win over visiting Averett University Tuesday afternoon. The rookie from Mandeville, La., set a career high with two tallies and raised his team-leading total to five on the year. The Quakers (3-7-1) remained unbeaten in their last four matches. Averett slips to 1-7 with the loss.

Alexander opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he collected a long cross from senior Scott Meguid (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) in the middle of the box and slotted it past Averett goalie Joe Dusewicz for a quick 1-0 lead. Alexander scored on a similar play except junior Sam Huff (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) served the ball inside instead of Meguid.

The teams remained scoreless until Meguid tallied an unassisted goal with just under 20 minutes to play. Rookie Layth Awartani and Robert Blackwell closed out the scoring in the final minutes.

Guilford outshot the Cougars, 30-6. Dusewicz made 10 saves for Averett, while a trio of Quakers’ netminders combined for two saves.

The Quakers are back in action Saturday (10/11) against visiting Washington and Lee University at 1:00 p.m. on Haworth Field.
