HS Football Saturday morning rewind:I went out for a nice relaxing blog

In between my Saturday morning duties at the Battleground BP/Automotive at 2512 Battleground Ave., it’s time to get into the blog like a mid-a.m. jog and move from garbage details to football game details from last night’s gridiron action.

Paul will have an account on NWG-East Forsyth coming up later this morning and we’ll be looking for news from Joe Barile(PP44) on Page-Smith and Lee will leave his mark hopefully on the results from Ragsdale at Trinity.

Last night’s picks went (10-2) to take the season record to (60-18) and it is hard to believe how strong the Northern Guilford program has become in year number one at the Varsity level. Northern tops Charlotte Christian 28-21 last evening and are (6-1) with wins over Charlotte Christian, previously unbeaten, and also an early season win against Victory Christian another independent powerhouse.

Maybe we shouldn’t be shocked at the Nighthawks start. Keenan Allen said the Charlottte paper had picked Christian to win but did the Observer really know that Northern had Allen from Grimsley, Maurice Harris from NEG, and Christian McCain from Page. Those guys are making a difference and we can’t leave out Rocky Scarfone who is really good at the QB spot for NG and he might have been at Northwest if not for the redistricting and who knows, Scarfone came out of Kernodle Middle, and he may have had NWG bylines before NG showed up and offered this outstanding football opportunity.

Northern is looking good and they will get better and the new conference lines that will go into effect next year will give NG a great draw as they go for 3-A playoff position next season.

Southern Guilford put up great fight before falling last night at McMichael 21-20 to the Fighting Phoenix. Give the Storm all the credit in the world for this excellent effort. One of our guests from the Shane’s Rib Shack Show, Matt Prioleau did a fine job for the Storm at quarterback and Wayne Scott ran hard at RB for SG and he had 2 TD’s in Scotty Wayne’s old spot and #23 was felt on the field as Southern battled for the win in “Scotty’s” honor, but came up just short, but that’s how life is, you must keep showing up each and every day, and keep on battling until the end, that’s how Scotty Wayne would have wanted it, and that’s how Southern is going to keep on going, with character and dignity.

High Point Central with QB Drew Adams and receiver Desmeion Kennedy running the offensive show topped Grimsley 10-3 at Jameison Stadium. Adams ran the show, but he got knocked around some and Kennedy had to take over and run the offense. Grimsley fans Ron Davidson and James Scales II are wondering if the Whirlies can get back into the end zone with Page due up next week. HPC is lookng real good with their (5-2/1-0) record and the Black Watch Defense directed by Coach Ken Helms is for real.

Southeast Guilford has taken a nose dive and it continued last night with the Falcons’ 45-28 loss to Asheboro. We need Damon King to come in and give us some insight on that game. High Point Andrews prevailed in the Raiders 20-19 win over Glenn and maybe Glenn isn’t as bad as people are making them out to be. How about former Glenn Bobcat Matt Cline scoring that touchdown for Appalachian State last weekend? Matt Cline is ‘Cat Coach Dickie Cline’s nephew.

WS Carver took out Southwest Guilford the hard way last night 41-14 with the Yellowjackets sending Southwest to (0-7) for the season. Dudley mauled Morehead, 46-0, to go (8-0) for 2008. Dudley’s defense is starting to dominate. As we mentioned earlier, Paul Lambeth II will have the update on East Forsyth’s 18-16 victory over Northwest. Joe Barile will fill us in on Page and the Pirates’ 34-14 win over Smith and Joe will give us a look ahead to next week’s game with Page at Grimsley and what that means to the two communities.

We will watch for the Ragsdale rundown from Lee, but it looks like the Tigers owned the first half against Trinity in the 23-8 decision, and then in the second stanza they had several breakdowns. Lee will let us in and give us some numbers, that’s what we need, some numbers….The numbers are looking good for Eastern Guilford after the Wildcats 10-6 win over WS Atkins to go (7-0/1-0) entering next week’s huge showdown with Reidsville which will be played at EG.

Speaking of numbers, Northeast Guilford led Western Alamance 13-10, but then the Warriors kicked it in high gear and went on to win this one 37-27 over NEG. I listened to some of the playback on AM920 WPCM this morning with Byron Tucker and Jake Potter and Jake needs to tone it down some. He’s talking too much and way too fast.

Shut up and let Tucker run the show and give the listeners a chance to catch up. Potter needs to back off and have Byron, the veteran broadcaster, get it done. Potter must pay his dues, his time has not yet come, he may feel like he knows a lot about the game but he hasn’t been there yet. I have been there and as a veteran football man I know these things and can play with the rookies and the vets and I am always glad to help.

One thought on “HS Football Saturday morning rewind:I went out for a nice relaxing blog

  1. It was a tough night for the Falcons. Southern Guilford Football and Southeast Football are linked in too many ways to put in this blog. Since Scotty Wayne’s death, it’s been anything but football as usual at Southeast. Scotty and Darren are friends and family to many of the Southeast Falcons. There’s been a huge Falcon presence at Scotty’s house this past week and a number of Falcon coaches and players were at Mount Zion for the funeral.

Things started out promising for the Falcons on Friday night. On the first Blue Comet possession. Tyrell Anderson, wearing number 23, in honor of his cousin Scotty Wayne, landed a big time hit on a Blue Comet receiver. Smallwood, Falcon Linebacker, returned the ball for about an 80 yard touchdown to put the Falcons on the board first.

On offense, the Falcon passing game was out of sync. Topps appeared to be trying too hard, but at least the Falcons made an effort to mix things up. This helped to open up holes for Alex Harrison, who could not be stopped in the first half. The Falcons and Blue Comets traded scores in what appeared to be a track meet in the first half. At half time the score was 24- 21 Blue Comets over Falcons.

The Falcons solved the penalty problems that plagued them the last two games. The problem was the Falcon defense was missing in action. The Blue Comets didn’t punt the ball in the first half. A Brian Webb interception in the end zone and the fumble caused by Tyrell Anderson stopped Blue Comet drives. The question at half time was could the Falcon offense match the Blue Comets touchdown for touchdown?

During the second half. The Falcon defense forced one Blue Comet punt and Brian Webb stopped another drive with an interception. Faglier, #5, for the Blue Comets, broke the game open after Falcon offense stalled in the 2nd half. I would have to run back the tape, but this kid had at least 200 plus yards and 4 touchdowns on the night. This Blue Comet team is the best team that Southeast has faced all year.

The Falcons only score of the 2nd half came on a Topps touchdown pass to Tyrell Anderson with less than 5 seconds on the clock. It was an emotional night for Anderson and the Falcons. He played most of the game favoring his right shoulder and he played both both ways. Each time he came to sideline, it was obvious he was in pain and could barely move his left arm. But on this night, he wasn’t leaving field. The kid just wanted to play for his cousin and friend.

When Anderon got into the endzone, he immediately dropped to a knee, pointed to sky, and then dropped his head in prayer. His teammates joined him in the endzone, not to celebrate, but to pay tribute to Scotty Wayne. Anderson was physically and emotionally spent. His teammates helped him to his feet and to the sidelines. As Topps kicked the extra point, many of the Falcon players were in tears. Coaches were hugging and holding players. Players were hugging and holding each other. They were grieving for there friend.

I’m not sure if this is the update you wanted. I will say this….I am more proud of what I saw out there on the football field and sideline in this loss than any victory this season.
