Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Wraps Up Play at Duke Coca-Cola Individual Collegiate

Chauncey Wins Inaugural Duke Coca-Cola Individual Collegiate

DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina’s Philip Chauncey fired a final round two-under 69 to overcome a five-shot deficit and claim the tournament win with a one-over 214 (74-71-69) at the Duke Coca-Cola Individual Collegiate. The challenging Duke University Golf Club (6,961 yards, par 71) yielded just three under-par rounds on Tuesday.

Chauncey, a native of Durham, N.C., posted 16 pars and two birdies for the only bogey-free round of the tournament. He opened the day with four straight pars before carding his first birdie on the 399-yard, par 4 fifth hole. Chauncey recorded 10 straight pars before moving to two-under with a birdie on No. 16. He closed out the round with pars on No. 17 and No. 18 to post a three-shot win.

Florida’s Tim McKinney finished second overall with a four-over 217. He shot a two-over 73 in the closing round after opening with a pair of 72s on Monday. The trio of Tripp Brazening (East Carolina), Carter Newman (Augusta State) and Chase MacFarland (North Carolina) finished tied for third at six-over 219.

Northern Illinois’ Jeff Dick, N.C. State Andrew Byrd and Vanderbilt’s John Ebert finished tied for sixth at seven-over 220, while Paul Ferrier (Charlotte) and Chad Day (N.C. State) were tied for ninth at eight-over (221).

Freshman Dusty Roberts shot 73-75-77-225, which placed first for Guilford and 20th overall in the 63-man field. Peter Latimer (78-73-75-226) tied for 24th and Burton Wood (76-76-80-232) finished in 39th place. Other Guilford scores included Jeff Boyan (76-77-83-236) and Brian Creghan (78-81-78-237).

Guilford, ranked 11th in the current Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches’ Poll, returns to action Oct. 19-20 at the Oglethorpe Invitational in Oakwood, Ga.
