College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 1, Eastern Mennonite 0 (2 ot)

HARRISONBURG, Va. (10-18-08) – Rookie Ethan Byrd (Liberty, N.C./S. Alamance) scored first college goal in the second overtime period to give visiting Guilford College a 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference soccer win at Eastern Mennonite University Saturday night.

Despite getting outshot, 28-9, Guilford (4-9-1, 3-3-1 ODAC) hung around and got stronger as the game wore on. Scott Meguid and Jordan Alexander both got off shots in the final 15 seconds of regulation, but Royals’ goalie Dillon Brunk was twice equal to the task.

The Royals’ Mitchell Leap got off a couple shots in overtime, but none on goal. Byrd scored the unassisted game-winner at 104:21 against goalie Jackson Maust, who played the first half and overtime for head coach Roger Mast.

Freshman Peter Truitt made five saves for his second college shutout. Brunk made two saves in the second half. Maust had one stop.

The Quakers visit nationally ranked Roanoke College Wednesday night (10/22) at 7:00 p.m. in another ODAC match. The Royals (9-6, 2-6) tries to end a four-match losing skid Wednesday night (10/22) in a nonleague tilt with visiting Greensboro College.
