Fobbs looks for new jobs:Fired as A&T football coach

from news-record.com and a follow-up to Don Moore’s morning post:
GREENSBORO — N.C. A&T fired football coach Lee Fobbs Jr. today after two full seasons and part of a third.

The school said running backs coach George Ragsdale will serve as interim coach for the rest of the 2008 season.

Fobbs won two games and lost 28 in three seasons after coming here from Texas A&M.

“We feel like this is the best decision for the program at this time,” athletics director Wheeler Brown said. “I certainly want to thank Lee for all his efforts over the last 2 ½ years, and I want to wish him well in allhis future endeavors. The program just needs a new direction.”

Ragsdale has been the team’s running backs coach for the past three seasons. The 1976 graduate of A&T ranks ninth on the school’s all-time rushing list with 1,989 yards. He played for six seasons in the NFL before coming a college coach at Morris Brown, Norfolk State and Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

from GREENSBOROSports.com:
****Ragsdale was also the head football coach at Dudley HS where his son was his QB and Ragsdale’s son later played for A&T and I believe he may have been the Aggies’ punter. I was digging in my mind and this may be a stretch, but I believe his name was Marcus Ragsdale and not George Jr. which would be our first inclination.

We spoke to Wheeler Brown about some of this cylce and even spent time in detail talking about George Ragsdale on our Football in Focus Show a couple of weeks ago. The big-time story on Ragsdale and his time at Dudley came from when Dudley played at Page a few years back when Marion Kirby was still there with the Pirates and a fight broke out between the two teams when they were shaking hands at mid-field after the game was over.

The story goes the players were going at it hard in the fight and they were even using their helmets as weapons and swinging the head-gears and using them to pop one another up side the head. Legend has it that Coach Ragsdale grabbed a helment, and said what the heck we need to win something because we lost the game, and he started throwing haymakers with the helmets in the direction of the Pirates. It was all going down in the heat of the moment, they say…….

Let’s hope the Aggies play “Heads Up Football”, come Saturday afternoon versus the Bison of Howard at Aggie Stadium.*****
