Guilford College Men’s Soccer Final – Roanoke 2, Guilford 1 (2ot)

SALEM, Va. (10-22-08) – Chris Collins’ goal with 22 seconds left in the second overtime period gave Roanoke College a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer win over visiting Guilford College Wednesday night. The win extended the Maroons’ (11-3-1, 7-1 ODAC) winning streak to six.

Roanoke is ranked seventh in this week’s adidas/National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III South Region Rankings.

Taylor Johnston got the hosts on the board in the 11th minute with a goal from close range off a Shaman Douglas cross. Roanoke outshot Guilford, 11-0, in the first half. Guilford goalie Peter Truitt made four of his nine saves in the first half to keep his club within a goal at halftime.

Guilford’s Jordan Alexander netted the equalized in the 66th minute off a Scott Meguid assist. The rookie’s team-leading seventh goal of the season ended Roanoke’s streak of five consecutive shutouts.

Neither team scored in the rest of regulation as Truitt and the Quakers’ defense kept Roanoke off the board, despite the Maroons’ 8-3 advantage in shots. The Quakers needed a couple back saves in the first overtime period to keep the game tied at 1-1.

Roanoke outshot Guilford, 23-3., and had 11 corner kicks to the Quakers’ none.

Guilford (4-10-1, 3-4-1 ODAC) returns home to play Emory & Henry College Saturday (10/25) in a 1:00 ODAC match. The Maroons visit league-rival Lynchburg College Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
