HS Football Saturday morning rewind

Two games from Friday were moved to Monday with Eastern Guilford at McMichael and Southwestern Randolph at Ragsdale now set for Monday evening at 7pm. Why they postponed these game, I don’t know, but I’m sure you wouldn’t want to be playing any football outdoors here on Saturday morning.

Our picks took a hit as we fell to 7-3 but it was good news in the case of some of the upsets with Southwest Guilford getting their first win of the year with the Cowboys’ victory over Reagan 14-3. No detalis but the passing game of SWG(1-8) has been strong all year long and it paid off last night. Western Guilford got the HUGE upset win as they knocked off the defending state 3-A Champions, Western Alamance 27-24, as the Hornets were cerrtainly celebrating into the night on their Homecoming. Corey McKenna delivered 4 TD passes for WG giving Ferrell Carter and all the faithful Hornet fans something to be excited about.

Page went down in what had to be an upset at Marion Kirby Stadium with the Pirates’ 9-7 loss to East Forsyth. Joe Barile will have the details for us later and this is a bit of a setback for Page who went unbeaten in the Metro 4-A last season. Paul Lambeth has posted the summary on the Northwest Guilford Vikings’ 14-6 win over Grimsley and now NWG is edging closer to the playoffs after back-to-back conference victories.

Dudley rolled to an easy win over Northeast Guilford but the Panthers got to work early and they earned what they took away from Bill Bookout Stadium on Friday night. The 52-7 final could have been worse but the Panthers brought in the reserves for most of the third and fourth quarters. Rakeem Overby scored on a 34 yard touchdown pass from Panther QB Ricky Lewis Jr. and Overby added another TD on 50 yard punt return. Major Bryant was busy for Dudley with five two-point conversion runs and an interception on defense and he also handled the kickoffs putting the ball into play from the tee, nine times on the night. Dudley(9-0/4-0) is looking very tough heading their game next week at Western Alamance.

Northern Guilford blasted Highland Tech out of Gastonia 60-14 and the Nighthawks are now (8-1) in their first year of Varsity competition. Rocco Scarfone, Keenan Allen, and Maurice Harris were again among the leaders for Northern. High Point Central kept Smith winless as the Bison and the Black Watch Defense bounced back after the 18-3 loss to NWG last week. Smith’s BJ Briley scored the first TD of the game and then it was all Drew Adams and Desmeion Kennedy after that. HPC at Page next week.

Southern Guilford got another well-deserved win at West Stokes taking it home to Sumner on a field goal, winning it 3-0 to move to (6-3) on the season. Kicker Albert Yeboah nailed the 24-yarder to win it for the Storm and Matt Priouleau had a steady game for SG at QB. Reidsville at Southern next week. Southeast Guilford crushed Rockingham County 34-0 behind Alex Harrison and Albert Haynesworth and the Falcons claimed another Homecoming victim.(Hopefully Damon can send us some more details and maybe Haynesworth is a realative of the DL from the Tennessee Titans.) SEG is now (5-4) after this non-conference affair and they have Eastern Randolph coming up next at ER on Thursday.

High Point Andrews our last Guilford County team fell 28-13 to the Winston-Salem Carver Yellowjackets and again the big question remains, “Did anybody ever see any rain last night”? There is one more game coming up on Thursday of next week along with SEG at ER, as NWG goes over to meet Smith in a strange week of HS football with two games coming on Monday, two on Thursday and the rest of the action set for next Friday. It won’t hurt Ragsdale at all having to play SWR at home on Monday because the Tigers are off next Friday before facing Asheboro in ZOO country to close out the season, and they hope it’s an unbeaten one.

*****Thanks to Don Moore for our updates on the games last night at the site.*****

  1. I wouldn’t call call the East win over Page an upset… last year East let Page get ahead big early and held Page in check to lose only by 2 points. East has played a tough schedule in beating Mount Tabor and West drilling them 3 weeks ago. I think this was expected from the East Forsyth side because the kids have gelled well together and have been playing together for 2 years on varsity now, so the experience is paying off and that is why I think this was not an upset win by the Eagles

  2. This was not necessarily an upset but it was a shock to me. The play that decided this game was the missed field goal by K Matt Millisor that would have lifted the Pirates over East Forsyth 10-9. As far as tough schedules go, the Pirates play a very tough schedule with losses to undefeated Ragsdale, undefeated Dudley, and bounceback Davie County. Also, it seems that we have biased referees at Kirby Stadium. They call a lot of nonsense penalties against Page that costs them dearly. Well, Pirates are still looking good. Next Friday is against High Point Central @ Kirby Stadium on Senior Night (and Halloween).

  3. There is no doubt that both of those teams are quality teams and well be successful in the playoffs in a few weeks. Both teams have the ability to make good runs deep into the playoffs!

  4. The refs did NOT cost Page that game, as there were several awful calls going against East, including a nonsense touchdown catch called back. These referees were terrible all around, hurting both teams equally.

  5. The refs didn’t cost Page the game. Page’s coaches play the players who can not catch a ball. Will Newman did a great job, but Page’s offense went no where because people are not catching the ball. I believe the team needs to work on catching in order to end the 4-game losing streak @ Kirby Stadium Friday.

  6. Page is still the defending Metro 4-A champion from last year and they were the favorite to repeat as Champs this year, and that’s why it was considered an upset and Page was at home. although as Jonathan told us, the home field hasn’t been kind to the Pirates lately at Marion Kirby Stadium.

  7. Warning for all Pirate fans—the Black Watch is coming to your town Friday night, watch out for #2 and #3.

  8. Page will take all of it’s frustations out on High Point Central. I wouldn’t want to be a Bison come Senior Night this Friday at Page.

No tricks and No treats. Just straight football coming right at you.
