College Women’s Soccer Final – Guilford 3, Emory & Henry 2 (2 ot)

Emory, Va. (10-29-08) – Lauren Baber scored with 4:09 left in the second overtime period to give visiting Guilford College a 3-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory at Emory & Henry College Wednesday night. The unassisted tally marked Baber’s fourth of the season and her team-leading third game-winning goal.

The Quakers’ victory in both teams’ regular-season finale clinched the sixth seed for the ODAC Tournament and sets up a quarterfinal match at third-seeded Washington and Lee University Saturday (11/1) in Lexington, Va. The time has not been announced. Emory & Henry’s season ends with an 11-8 record (4-7 ODAC) as the Wasps missed out on one of the two remaining tourney spots by virtue of the league’s tie-breaking procedure.

Guilford (8-11, 6-5 ODAC) grabbed a 1-0 first-half lead on Marina Schachawskoj’s first goal as a Quaker. It came in the 32nd minute off assists by Jada Daniel and Amanda Sperr.

The one-goal lead stood until just under five minutes into the second half Emory & Henry’s Loren Fovale tied the score off a Kelsey Sellers corner kick.

Guilford’s Emma Blaylock (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville) netted her first goal of the year around 10 minutes later off Daniel’s second assist of the match, but Fovale and Sellers combined again with a game-tying tally, this one in the 75th minute.

The Quakers got a scare with just under nine minutes remaining when senior goalie Amber Stapler left the game and was replaced by rookie Kat Adams. Guilford’s defense buckled down and kept the Wasps without a shot on goal until the first overtime period, which Adams successfully stopped.

Guilford enjoyed a 25-22 edge in shots, including a 6-2 margin in overtime. Stapler made seven of Guilford’s 10 saves, which included two back saves. Hayley Poland made 14 stops for Emory & Henry.
