Guilford’s Vogelbach Nears NCAA Division III Passing Record

Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College senior quarterback Josh Vogelbach (N. Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot (East Carolina)) enters this Saturday’s (11/8) homecoming game with the Catholic University of America 98 yards shy of the NCAA Division III career passing yardage record. Vogelbach, who plays his final home college game Saturday, also needs 217 total offensive (rushing + passing) yards to set the Division III career mark. Westminster (Mo.) College’s Justin Peery set both records from 1996-99.

The national standards would mark the latest in a growing list of Vogelbach’s statistical accomplishments. The four-year starter already holds 15 NCAA records and enters Saturday’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest with 13,165 career passing yards. He has completed 1,147 of 1,910 passes in 38 career games with 121 touchdowns. Vogelbach set the Division III career records for pass completions, attempts and 300-yard passing games (25) in the Quakers’ Sept. 27 setback at Hampden-Sydney College. He also broke Division III career standards for 200-yard passing games (37), total offensive plays (2,386) and 300-yard total offense games (27) this season.

Vogelbach’s numbers figure prominently among the NCAA’s individual collegiate leaders, which include students from all four NCAA football divisions. With 1,910 pass attempts and 2,386 total offensive plays, he stands second only to the University of Hawaii’s Timmy Chang in NCAA history. Vogelbach is tied for third place with former North Carolina State University signal-caller Philip Rivers with 1,147 career completions and needs 319 yards to pass Rivers for 11th place on the all-time passing yards list. Vogelbach also ranks 10th in career touchdown passes (121) and 12th in total offensive yards (13,429), 286 yards behind the University of Houston’s Kevin Kolb.

The Quakers (4-4, 1-3 ODAC) are 21-17 over the past four years with Vogelbach at the helm, which matches the school’s most wins in four years since Guilford joined Division III in 1991. If the Quakers win their final two games, the team will match the school’s highest win total in a four-year period (23).

Kickoff Saturday at the Quakers’ Armfield Athletic Center is 1:00 p.m. Catholic (7-1, 3-1 ODAC) enters the contest atop the ODAC standings with Hampden-Sydney as both teams race for the league title and its automatic Division III play-off berth.
